Breaking Record @ KLCC

Report from Justin Timberlake @ PM19

Here you go Ron...

Unintentional record @ KLCC 29/9/2004

The day began as usual, with me logging on to http://pm1.blogspot.com/ despite the fact that I had work to do! Going to his website and participating in both the chatbox and forum has been part of my life for the past few weeks, and it is addictive! Anyway back to the story of our run. Left the office at 6pm sharp as I was told by Ronnie that he’ll be at the KLCC park at “6.27pm”. Went to my car got changed, stretched a little and off I ran to the park. When I arrived at the park I saw Newton who obviously wasn’t running today. He said he had to leave early. Oh well, hopefully you get to run today man. Shortly after Kenneth was just about finishing his run and he stopped and chatted with us. Turns out that all the water fountains at KLCC today were out of order. Probably no water supply. So we left Newton and proceeded to the nearby stalls intending to buy 100 Plus. We bumped into Rohaizad and chatted for a bit. We talked about what was discussed in the chatbox and it centered around one person- this fella by the name of Gypsum, and his rather pugnacious and belligerent entries into the chatbox. Why are you so mad? We are here to help each other, not grab each other’s throats. Ok, you give it all you got in a race but that’s it. We train as friends and we try to raise each other’s levels as runners.

Anyway Ronnie turned up shortly after (dunno whether it was 6.27pm or not) and after some stretching and warm-ups we were ready to run. Our intention was to keep the pace consistently at 6:30 per lap (did we keep that pace? Hahaha, read below). Kenneth and Rohaizad decided to join us for a lap, which was great because the more the merrier.

Off we started at the 800meter mark. The pace was very comfortable and for my part at least I was breathing very, very easily. Kenneth and Rohaizad slowed down around the 500-600 meter mark (I wasn’t sure) and Ronnie and I continued. As we approached around the 730 meters mark I looked at my watch and saw that the time was 5:47. I told Ronnie “Eh, this is too fast man…” and true enough when we completed the time for the 1st lap was 6:11. Too fast! Ronnie and I were surprised because we felt we weren’t pushing the pace at all and this was faster than the opening lap of last week’s run. Anyhow we continued and I felt that we were slowing the pace until Ronnie told me the time for the 2nd lap: 6:01. Unbelievable! We were still feeling really fresh and we couldn’t believe the time. By then we covered the 3rd lap in 5:54. Laps 4, 5, 6 and 7 were covered in about the same times: 5:59, 5:57, 5:58, and 5:57. I think it was around lap 4 onwards that the rain started spitting on us. Yup, more like spitting than a full-blown rain. Still it was enough to wet the track and while the rubber portions were ok, the tile portions were slightly slippery. By the 7th lap we were starting to feel it but we soldiered on. Last lap came and I upped the pace little by little until past the 250meter mark when I decided to really push it. I completed the lap in 5:23, and Ronnie finished soon after.

Anyway here is the breakdown of the 8 laps at KLCC:

6:11, 6:01, 5:54, 5:59, 5:57, 5:58, 5:57 and 5:23. Total time: 47:23.28. Ronnie’s time was 47:41.42 So new records for us at the KLCC park! We weren’t intending to do so but the conditions felt right and we were probably running at a decent pace too.

While we were running we did see Julian. Hi Julian! In case we didn’t say hi to you when we were running. And Tey was there too, he took photos of us running. Malu lah hehehe. Presumably he took photos of the gang too.

While Ronnie and I were doing our warm downs and stretching we chatted with Tey and he’s a hardcore fella man! He’s done climbathons, and gone to various events, all self financed. Still his employer Sin Chew gives him a lot of freedom to do so. Apparently he has plenty of leave which he takes advantage of by attending the running/climbing events. He tells us that he’s also an active contributor to the Taiwanese running website. But since I’m a banana I can’t read the contents of the website. Anyway by the time we left it was raining- not too heavy, more like a shower. Another session of running past, looking forward to the next one.

Training @ Kampung Pandan

Yday training was really tough like hell. Coach really give kau-kau for the 1st group runner. We did a Set-Time for 400m x 16 times, resting is about 20 - 25 sec sahaja. Wan 2 drink water oso don't hv enough time. I still remember our max set-time is only 8 kali sahaja, this time double the amount. Really '' Wan 2 See Kiau Kiau'' lah. Lucky i still can mantain that pace. N so happy to see Justin the Pacemaker #19 here too.

Here are my lap time:

1:34 - 1:35 - 1:34 - 1:34 - 1:34 - 1:32 - 1:32 - 1:33

Thank God i make it!

Power of Plain Water

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers.

Members of the public are urged to come together with their families to the event which is being held in conjunction with World Heart Day.

Fellowship @ KLCC

Unbelievable! Someone did 5 min 19 sec for the last lap out of the 8 laps. Who did it? Me? Azwar? or Justin? Teng! Teng! Teng! Teng! The winner goes to JUSTIN LEE!!! Wat a big surprise, the underdog of the year. Everyone did dare to push, until the very last lap. It was Azwar make the perfect pace, me n Justin just follow. I
will shout out loud everytime we pass 1 lap, juz to make sure we don't go that fast.

After going for the last lap, Justin power on n speed like no body business. Me n Azwar even smell no smoke. Azwar did not finish the last lap, due to injury, so he has to stop wif only 500m to go. So sad for him. Once again, congrat to Justin. For making this a wonderful run. Justin almost break my record, maybe next time he can do it.

Here are our lap time:

6:21 - 6:14 - 6:11 - 6:11 - 6:08 - 6:08 - 6:07 - 5:19 = 48 min 43.04 sec.

Justin - 48:43
Ronnie - 48:49
Jamie - 1' 04m
Kenneth - 1' 05m
Azwar - DNF

Wangsa Maju Run 2004 - report

This event was held on 18th sept (saturday), b4 Pj Half Marathon. So i take this run as my warm up run lah. According to Vincent aka PM10. He oredi measure the route distance, n it is 8.2km. Not 7.5km, which was mention by the organizer (lucky we do our homework). So i'm gonna run at 5mins per km, which mean should be crossing the finishing line in time of 40:00 mins.

Once the gun bang. I try to go as slow as i can, but after 4km. Engine getting hot, asking me to turbo. So i slowly start to shift gear 2 to gear 5, n manage to potong lot of sayur-sayuran. At the last 2km was the hardest task. Hill.. hill.. hill.. i can see a lot of sayur are walking liao, so i slash one by one without any problem lah. For the last 1km, turbo at 80% pace until finishing line without any difficulty. Come back wif a big smile on my face, hehehe...

Positives:
Organizer very kaya (Landmark Properties) mah.
Free breakfast, eat as many as u can.
Free goodies bag, take as many as u like (i take two)
Lot of lucky draw, more than 100 over (but i didn't wait).
They even hv a 2.2km trial run, b4 the actual race event. (got medal somemore)
Champion get RM1500, more money than KOTR or Shah Alam.
Water station provided n even hv a check point.
Distance marker provided for the last 4 kilometer.

Negatives:
Blardy hell, %^$&# plastic medal! (cilaka, very tulan).

Men's Open Category:
25:50 - Arul Thevar (Champion)
34:49 - San Kok Keong (27th)
35:30 - Lee Yoon Mian (29th)

Tanjung 10Km Run 2004 - Race Report

Race Report from Ketam Batu:

Before the race?
The Tanjung 10K (T10K) was held at the infamous (and bladdy muddy) Padang Polo. We (me and Becholi) went to collect our bibs on Saturday from the usual Batu Uban Sports Complex. We were surprised to see police outriders manning the front gate. Wah, major event huh. Parked our car and proceeded to the collection room. Heard some guy giving out some patriotic speech! Wahlau, it's no other than Koh Tsu Khoo, the Penang Chief Minister. Well, he was there to launch another function, nothing gotta do with the T10K. Went straight to collect our bibs, entered the room, there were a handful of people already queuing up. Looked round.. apalah.. really no Sponsor la! It was a PAAA self-funded run. No goodie bags, nothing..elek !

Race day?
Reached Padang Polo at around 7.00am. Parked the car at the General Hospital grounds, just opposite the Padang. Took a slow jog to the reporting area. Yes, there were no loud techno music, no senamrobic, apa pun tarak ! Just a simple Start/Finish banner. There weren't any booths setup for bag deposits either. Luckily we left our bags in the car- that explains the lack of photos too. Reporting was done using the 'kandang kerbau' method. We were given a yellow band and shooed into the Polo Ground School compound. Looked around, saw the usual runners..mostly Penang veterans, Dam runners, the usual suspects. Of course there were the eager school boys and girls too. I guess the more famous runners were down in PJ for the Half. 7.30am, The flood gates opened and all the 'kerbaus' were led to the Start/Finish line. I tried to squeeze my way through the 600 strong
crowd to get a good front start. There was a brief speech, given by some senior official of the PAAA (must be the secretary) but I guess no one was paying attention. Couldn't hear what he was mumbling about also. Then suddenly this official whipped out a gun! From his pocket. Wah, I think he practices this everyday..gaya betul ! With a short countdown, he squeezed the trigger and off we go.

1KM? (Jalan Macalister)
Aiks! They changed the route ah! We were supposed to cut through the Hospital car park opposite but instead they re-directed us to a slightly longer route. Well, I was busy steaming ahead, cutting people left and right. I told myself to slow down and not get sucked into the vacuum. Slowed down my pace slightly behind a leng lui (I was running without specs!) Damn, she's fast (She later ended up 2nd in the Women's Open).

2.5KM (Jalan Anson)
Becholi caught up with me. I signaled to her to pass, as I was easing off the pace into cruise control. The we approached this middle aged Indian runner (who looked like the clean cut Amitabh Baachan). Stuck to his buntut..

3KM (Jalan Burma)
Passed the Indian runner at the turn to Jalan Burma and wanted to speed off, but I decided to hold my pace. Becholi up her pace slightly and was 10m in front. Well, he (the Indian runner) didn't want to give up his position and turbo'ed past both of us. We exchanged passes all the way till Jalan Kelawai (4KM).

4.5 KM (Jalan Pangkor-Jalan Kelawai)
I was running at a comfortable pace, Becholi has pulled away to some 50m away. I was still pacing with the Indian runner, cutting a few uncles and school boys. I think the Turbo session was taking it's toll on my body. I felt a slight cramp in my stomach. I decided to ease my pace even more. Had to let the Indian runner go.

5KM (Jalan Kelawai ? Jalan Gottlieb)
Collected my 2nd band (red) and was pacing with a teenager and another local chinese runner. It was going uphill for like 500m..arrgh!! Looked at my watch, time was still on my side. Just continued to run easy when
suddenly an Indian couple (Veterans) 'potong sayur' me. I couldn't just let them go so I turn on my turbines(what's left of it) and 'potong' them back. Silly ! That used up 30% more fuel..I started the race on ½ tank and by now I'm already near 'e' .

7Km (Jalan Utama)
Ah..a familiar running route. I like this part because it's shady and cooling. Up my pace a little and could clearly see Becholi up front and the Leng Lui further ahead, busy 'potong-ing' from the middle of the road ! I knew it was her because her legs were so fair..hahaha ! Just as I were about to reach the turn to Jalan Macaliste (7.5km), a girl turbo'ed past me. Not again ! I tried to turbo back but somehow my turbine was already over heating. Sadly, I have to let her go.

8Km (Jalan Macalister)
By now, the top finishers have already completed the course. I looked at my watch, holy sh!t, time is running out. I must have eased my pace too much. I ditched my pacer and increased my pace. I had a good time passing
some tiring runners, and being passed by others too.

9Km (Jalan Residensi)
Another Leng Lui (wearing full Grey Asiscs gear) whizzed pass me. My turbines were functioning again, so I turbo'ed behind her. She probably has plenty of fuel left while my lungs were already moving into overdrive.

10Km (Sepoy Lines Road (Padang Polo) /Finish)
Just before the turn into the Final stretch, I came side by side to this middle-aged Chinese runner. I could see the Finishing line in front of me, but couldn't really judge the actual distance, blurred vision..hehe. He told me in Hokkien "Kau Liau Kau Liau, Boey Sii Liau Ah" (Translated "Reaching, Reaching, Gonna 'Die' soon). Well, I gave him a shout and asked him to put in a final dash for the Finishing line. I turned on my second turbine and turbo'ed away. Well, he didn't follow though. Damn, I 'potong-sayur' quite a number of people but like NOS, my gas soon ran out, barely 30m from the line. Damn, can't give up now, lungs were already in oxygen starvation mode! Passed the line and checked on my watch..haiya..missed my target sub 1hr ! Collected my finishers' Medal.

Post Race.
It was a pleasant surprise that all runners were asked to take a walk accorss the Padang and proceed to the Governor's house (his compound la). There we have it..some flip-flopping in their slippers, topless males
showing their Char Koay Teow bellies, all happily walking into the Governor's grounds. We conjured at the side of his very very big newly refurbished Mansion. The grounds were ½ as large as the Botanical Gardens. There were the usual speeches and prize giving. Becholi got a medal for her 3rd placing. The highlight was the lucky draw for a new Honda EX5 motorbike. Unfortunately, we didn't get any of the draw prizes.

In summary, the run was properly organized although self-funded (except for the EX5). Things started and ended on time, no drink stations though. The PAAA has probably learnt and gain experience from organizing bigger events like the Penang Bridge Run and MAS Intl Marathon (Dinosaur years ago). Kudos to everyone!

Penang Round the Island Relay - update

Tour de Penang

The TdP Team is finally complete and fully assembled with 15 runners from various groups. In what represents a truly colourful group, we have runners from the Pacemaker Team, Team Penguins, Permaisuri Gangs and other imported runners, we hope to primarily have fun while racing this event.

Coordinating this team will be challenging. Ketam Batu who is based in Penang and acting as our ear-on-the-ground is responsible for accomodation arrangements while Team Captain Ronnie will be responsible to crack
the whip in case anyone pulls out.

As this is a team event, hence if anyone pulls out, it will affect the team's arrangement. Ronnie will communicate to everyone the date of submission for the entry as well as the finalized team members, and from then on there must be no withdrawals.

To safeguard against pull-outs, a deposit will be collected based on the room sharing arrangements. For example, if 4 persons want to share a room, then the 4 should come up with 50% deposit. So if the room is
RM100, then each of the 4 will pay RM13 each. In the event of forfeiture, the money will go to the team.

Breakdown of the course as confirmed by Vincent (PM10)
Leg 1 = flat (fastest runners here to build gap)
Leg 2 = flat (fastest runners here to build gap)
Leg 3 = flat
Leg 4 = Uphill all the way (strong hill runner needed)
Leg 5 = 500m up and all the way down
Leg 6 = flat
Leg 7 = 2K flat, 3.9K steep hill
Leg 8 = down hill (strong quads needed)
Leg 9 = (able to stand heat)
Leg 10 = (able to stand heat)
Leg 11 = (able to stand heat)
Leg 12 = (able to stand heat)

Shah Alam 10km Run 2004
