X Country Run - Race Report on 30th Jan 2005
Medal #85:
-------------
After 3 years of battling, the hard-earned medal is finally in my hand liao! Wear it around my neck n sleep until morning. Haha! Haha!
First of all, to race or not to race? That made me very pening kepala lor. I really don't hv much confidence about this X-Run, due to my 1 week rest for honeybulan. Stamina n speed all gone wif the wind liao! But i really love this X - Country lah! Wat to do, it has been part of my annual event liao wor. Where can miss miss wan!
To know whether i qualify to take part or not, I gave myself 1 week to train, wif not much time left. Gua really hentam the kau-kau lat everytime at the training! Mileage hitz more than 70km! My rest day was only the day b4 the race, n that was saturday. The rest of the days were ALL OUT! (speed until u lau sai). After 1 week of hard training, finally signed up the X-Run at 11:55am Saturday & bib # A278. As u all know lah, in KL register at the very last minutes oso mo mang tai wan. But TNS Chen bib show #A283, ayo! he wuz even later than me lah. Like that oso wanted to challenge me! Nvmlah, that guy always late wan. Hehe...
To cut the crap, full adventure report pls refer @ pm25 website ya! http://www.petalingrunner.blogspot.com/
FYI, only 4 pacemakers took part in the X-Run, they were PM1, PM8, PM24 n PM25. Most of the time ppl will say pm1 always there to spoit market. But sadly, it is pm1 who keeps the flag flying high most of the time..

der_pacemaker # 26
Name's Ajeep Rashidi. 25, male, from Klang.
When I was a kid, I was chubby. In Std 3, I had a kidney problem. Doctor told me not to play any kinda sports. When I entered Form 1, still chubby. I was in a boarding school, and there were sports events early that year. Like, 7K run, and a few others. But I got doctor's permission giving me a reason to skip those activities. Some might love that chance, but not me. I skipped the event but I didn't like it at all. I hated being the sick one. So, after that day, there was a rugby inter-class tournament. I jumped on that chance, I learned rugby. I loved it, and played it almost everyday. And football too. I ran sometimes. When I was in Form 4, I tried cricket and I loved it instantly! I loved it even more than rugby or football. I was very serious about it. Started running everyday. Whenever I didn't have training, I would spend at least half an hour running. Played for school team in Form 4, played for Federal Territory in Form 5.
After school, I got into a local university. Didn't play any sports. My university didn't have cricket. Didn't run either. I hated it whenever I run, people would stare and gawk at me, like I was doing something stupid.
Early this year, I noticed that I'd gained some extra padding in my mid section (pot belly). Toyed with the idea of running again. Went to a few running websites and that got me pretty excited. That was when I learned about PACM. But, I didn't get too much time to run, as office work really took up most of my time. Until recently, I told myself that I have to get back in shape. Work comes second. My health is first.
Instead of other sports, I chose running because my fitness and performance, are solely determined by my body. My body is the gauge. My body is the instrument. Unlike other sports. I just love the idea of challenging your body, and pushing the limit. It seems like there's no limit to what our body can do. It's just amazing. Thanks to running, I've quit smoking. Never done any race, so Nilai will be my debut.

Asics' New Distributor
According to Mr. Glenny of First-2 Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd (the current distributor of Asics), Asics has appointed a new distributor who is based in Singapore. The name is below :
Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei
RUNNER'S WORLD PTE. LTD
119 Genting Lane #02-01
H&H Ind. Building
SINGAPORE 349570
TEL: 65-6842-3651
FAX: 65-6842-3596
E-mail: mail@runnersworld.com.sg
As of 1st of Jan 2005, Runner's World will handle the distribution of Asics for the countries stated above. First-2 Marketing will cease to distribute the shoes and that is why we runners are left in a lurch coz all the Asics shoes have been yanked from the shelves all across Malaysia. For those who can find them, it's probably brought in by other means and not through the distributor itself.
First-2 Marketing will still have the chance to distribute the apparels BUT can only do that till the end of May 2005. So for now, we have to wait for Runner's World to set up shop OR appoint a new distributor for Malaysia.

The Elusive PR
The regulars at KLCC have been hitting PRs after PRs for the 5, 8 and 10 laps with such regular frequency. I'm typically better over a longer distance which is why it's been so difficult for me to break 1 hour for the 8 lapper (10.4K). I'd set off according to pace and go crazy after the 3rd lap only to completely fizzle out.
Newton (PM18) on the other hand have PR'd like nothing by simply observing and maintaining pace. And yes, drinking milk. On his egging, I tagged along for another attempt to break 1 hour for the 8 lapper. The strategy: do a warm up lap, then hit 8 laps at 7:00 per lap.
It was very hot when we got to the park and I hadn't hydrated as well as the day before. The warm-up first lap was covered in 8:30 sharp and we picked up pace to 7:08 for the second - Rohaizad tagged along on this one. The 3rd was 7:00 sharp and then I decided to open up the pace in the fourth and surged forward. Didn't felt really fast though and Newton was just next to me. Then I pressed on further in the 5th onwards and concluded the workout in the eighth lap - decided to take the warmup lap as valid as I was already nearing max. If I was fitter, I could've pushed one more lap and lowered the time. And to extend the imagination further (hey, I can dream too, right?!), another lap could've yielded a 10 lap PR as well.
Oh well, another day!
Here was the outcome:
Lap 1: 8:30
Lap 2: 7:08
Lap 3: 7:00
Lap 4: 6:56
Lap 5: 6:43
Lap 6: 6:57
Lap 7: 6:46
Lap 8: 6:36
Total: 56:41.23
Average Lap: 7:05
Finally aced sub 1-hour. And I was surprised I was able to sustain the surge. Except for Lap 6 where I lost the pace a bit, all lap times were progressively faster. An improvement finally, thanks to Newton's egging. Incidentally, Newton didn't do too badly either, coming in about 15 seconds after.

Reasons to Keep Running
It's surprising why we keep at this sport which brings us pain. Pain to the knees, the butt and black toes are what we runners see as something common - a rite of passage.
But fret not! Here's a light hearted look at why we should continue to do what we've come to love (in the context of PM runners and visitors to this website)!
- escaping from bears and cobras
- escaping from roaming perverts
- outrunning tidal waves
- understanding the psyche of stray dogs and outrunning them
- collecting medals and certificates
- develop agility to dodge mad drivers
- develop an acute night vision from running in the dark
- losing weight
- farting
- shaving legs and other hairy parts
- running in the rain- meeting chicks
- meeting people from all over the world
- improved stamina for sax play
- improved stamina for sex play
- improved stamina for badminton
- getting married and calling your wedding a half marathon
- having the opportunity to organize a run for just about any occassion
- buying new shoes and gears
- drinking isotonics without fear of diabetes
- chatting like silly on this website
- getting featured in newspapers and websites
- travelling to far off places
- climbing mountains
- improving skills with the camera
- improving writing skills from all the reports
- calling each other names
- opportunity to match make like-minded people
If the above don't get you out there running, I don't know what will!

Hello everybody.
I am a colleague of Jamie and Newton. I started running early this year under the Dr's advise that I should exercise at least 4 times a week to improve my cholesterol levels. Sometime last year, I attempted to run 4km under the hot sun and suffered a nose bleed. I had no knowledge about running until another Dr came into the picture...
The Dr is none other than Jamie aka PM5. He coaxed me into running the 10km KLIM 2004 and succeeded. After several races, I became like him, coax others to run. In a way, we are like drug peddlers, peddling endorphins. Has anybody tried drinking coffee after a run?
Newton aka PM18 also happened to be my childhood schoolmate back in La Salle Sentul. He and Jamie have been influential in getting me moltivated in the various aspects of distance running. I may seem lanky but I lack stamina and definitely not a fast runner. I completed my first PJ Half-Marathon this year and look forward to repeat the feat in the forthcoming KLIM 2005.
Regards, Cheong Shih Heng @ PM12

New Year, New Hope
HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's been a challenging year - plenty of ups and downs. The year unfortunately ended with the tsunami disaster which swept over a large portion of north-western Sumatra, parts of Penang and sunny Phuket, Sri Lanka, Maldives and other surrounding coastal towns. The total death toll stands at over 120,000 at this time with much more anticipated as rescuers recovered more and more bodies. The number is astounding - I can't imagine how many that number represents. Maybe if you picture this: a fully packed Maracana Stadium (the largest football stadium in the world) in Brazil can "only" hold 100,000.
That wasn't the only catastrophe to hit this planet. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, perished as a result of armed conflict in Dafur, Sudan. The level of aid granted to the African nation didn't reach the amount raised for the tsunami disaster. Perhaps the Sudan case presented a greater political challenge. In any case, it was really tragic that the people of Sudan have been forgotten.
So besides having a get together between us runners on New Year's Day, I thought it was a good opportunity to dedicate something meaningful in memory of those perished. A 20K run it was. On my drive down to Bukit Aman, I encountered the usual party "kakis" comprising of Jinjang Joes, A2A9s, Scooter Gangs still roaming the streets at 4:30am and I thought how silly they were to have missed enjoying a beautiful Saturday morning.
It took awhile for everyone to turn up, so we took off only just before 5:30am. The morning was quite blustery and chilly. I found that I was huffing and puffing harder than usual and thought that my missed week of workout was taking its toll. I only realized that I had been running harder than usual when I checked my watch at the halfway point - 58 minutes, a full 8 minutes faster than my usual pace. I took a shorter return trip as my left knee was acting up forcing me into some short walk breaks and a slight limp. I completed the second half in 59 minutes.
As it was still early and with my Mom accompanying my Mrs Carbo and Carbo Kid at home, I could join the guys for some breakfast and to view Tey's amazing photos from his awesome marathon adventure. It was also nice to have caught up with Azwar and getting to know a newcomer Howard.
A nice cool and cloudy morning, a nice start to the year. Another long run beckons tomorrow!
