Tey's Kedah 12 Hours Run Report

My condition is worry me before the Kedah 12hrs run, cause didn't have enough training for 12hrs run,and my right ankle felt pain also.Lucky the race eve, have a good 1 hour warm up run which boost my self confidence and make me relax, can't believe is it ? Compare to last year went alone, this year I have Kenny Tan,Penang Chin,Penguin 2 Tan Khee Meng and Penguin 6 Terence Leong accompanied me,I really hope Kenny and P2 can deliver the honorary for KL group, they are fit and train enough before KLIM.So I believe they will deliver good news for us.

We met Chin at Alor Setar bus station at 5pm,toke 2 taxi to Kupang Sepat, after about 25 minutes we arrived Kubang Sepat, all of us are excited. This year participant received a goodies bag when registration open which have 1 pair of sock,2 small pack biscuit,2 chinese orange,1 500ml mineral water.I and others KL gang went to nearby Kedai runcit to buy extra mineral water,100PLUS.I gave PLUM powder to all of us from KL and Penang gang, and also gave to some local runners who are so interested after listen my explain the benefit of this plum powder. This year the total of participant have more than 100,about 60 male participant, glad to meet 2 of Pacesetters from Penang. Before the start,we put the sport drink on roadside table, but I put my bangkok marathon bag in the results pondok, which I put 2nd pair shoe,2 1.5litre 100plus,4 1.5litre mineral water, medicine, power gel, power bar,etc..

I as usual, waiting to snap foto of the flag off exactly at 7pm,for the first 2 laps,I still have chance to snap our gang foto and some runners on riverside ,under the sunset and crossing bridge foto,I put my camera after 3 laps ,concetrate in running, even I was left behind at early stage,I just enjoy it,keep my pace of slow running with patient, since this is a war of our endurance and stamina ,plus mentally,12 hours run and walk,it was long long way to go before the next day sunrise, but I saw Nasir,Malaysia Book of Record holder in Round of the Penisula and from Tawau to Kuching,he was so fast ,Kenny follow him for a while only. But Nasir withdraw from the race after 9 laps because of his foot cramp.Me,P2,Kenny,Penang PACM Lee and other one chinese guy all finished 10 laps within 4 hrs with 35km,I must thankfull that Haris came with his lovly family to support us,first I am surprise, afer few seconds ,I just realised he is Haris lah,,hahahaha,,so happy !But the race start change when the second 4 hours,I overtoke P2 at 12th laps and Kenny at 13th laps, left me and the Penang Lee fight for champion,Lee is coming very strong and consistent, when I went for 22th laps,Kenny told me at results pondok as Lee is start his 23rd laps,wah..that mean champion is impossible for me,cause I start felt maintain as runner up will be good for me also. After 24 laps which I finished about 7hrs 54 minutes,I plan to relax my self, and don't want so pia,so walk fast ,start ate my biscuit, power gel cause felt so hungry, outside ppls may don know,if I felt hungry ,that mean very very hungry liao..........!!

Both of my leg also felt little heavy after 24th laps, but I believe still can go for 3 or 4 laps non stop slow run, after rethink few times,I decide to walk in last 4 hours, even I got only 91km which equal to 26 laps(one lap= 3.5km),but I am happy ,atleast target to maintain last year 84km achieved, original target is 90km .During the first 20laps,I ate a lot of orange and drink a lot of PLUM water,I strong believed it help me to clear the wall of cramp...hehehe....! I learnt from mistake at KLIM ,add the plum powder in every bottle ,easy for me and avoid not enough !The worst experience in the race is after ate few biscuits,I went NUMBER ONE at 24th laps,it is terrible experience, cause I was so worry my leg will get cramp inside NUMBER ONE,lucky nothing happen....hahaha ...! After finished 26th laps, even I still have about 16 minutes, but it is impossible to cover one more lap by fast walk...so just wait the final results come out with patient.

I am suprise I can finished 91km,maintain runner-up for me is not bad,as I am not a good ultra marathon runner, cause I don't have proper training for this event,if join a 12 hours run,we need to have 3 times of 8 hours LSD,it is true,I can't forward again after that(even my fizikal still ok),may be we need to have good supporter, supplier station and good thinking ,to fire up our spirit to push yourself to the limit, but u have to prepare very very painfull after the race. For others,as first timer, their performance is very good, espcially P2 ,even 48 years old,he get my 100% respect ,even he look very tired, feel uncomfortable, but he can keep it contiuned ,it is not easy, well done P2 !!

As you guy know 32 years old Kenny Tan is very fast guy, really pia,I am sure he can't patient my pace, even he keep saying to pace for him,but after a few laps,he lost his patient, went faster pace, that mean ,if you didn't have enough and proper training, after 8 hours ,you will hit the wall, anyway ,it is good experience for him,as he didn't have any full marathon race experience, sure will he boost his full marathon in sub4.For famous 41 years old Terence Leong, his tactic is correct ,enjoy it ,no rush ,when I toke foto ,he very sensitive pose for me to take his nice smiling photo, before his finished his race, listen to my advice for fighting the cert (60km),he wear sandal finished two more rounds. But after that ,I found I wrong ,it only need 50km lah...hahahaha...but anyway it is good outing for P6,well done, only miss with medal ,just so close. The champion Lee is strong, running non stop ,he is real ultra marathon runner ,ask his secret for success,he said no training at all !! What ?! Aiyooooooo, how come ah ? Only I can said he is genius ultra marathon runner ,well done !!

ran home yesterday
yes i ran from office to home
wife was on leave and wanted me to be home earlier than usual to have dinner before fetching our 2 sons
having a quiet, unhurried, slowly chewing meal is a moment we enjoy
in order to get back earlier that would mean to skip the run at klcc park
therefore to have both of 2 worlds i ran home

the run took about 35 minutes
normally with traffic jam like yesterday it would probably take about 1 hour by car to reach home

possible problems:-
- traffic, could be dangerous running by the roadside and crossing roads
- uneven pavement, possible to twist ankle
- vehicle fumes, may not be healthy
- storage, where to keep wallet and h/phone.

Note: PM18 stays near Tmn Tasik Titiwangsa. He ran home from his office at Jalan Ampang.

Wat a wonderful trip to Teluk Cempedak Kuantan (me 1st timer), especially wif der pacemakers gang rocking along! Making dis trip even more meaningful n enjoyable. It was Petalingrunner aka PM25 who keep poisoning me. "Kum lah! Kum lah!" n he is willing to be der driver too, coz he love to drive like mad. So i quickly sms my Secretary aka PM17. My secretary oso got no problem, my Binitary aka PM21 oso OK! So everyone comfirm, Yebah! then off we go! Hehehe, Ajeep aka PM26 der Hamsapfella hor, didn't even know dat we're going to kuantan. @ der Starting Line!
Kan cheong time! der race started only @ 7:45am. 7:30am baru mahu start speech! GrrRRrrr!! 5-4-3-2-1! Pooot! Once they flag off. I speed like lembu liao! I was in der leading pack, position unsure? Coz only 1 bib number was given out to runners, so its quite imposible to see lor. I think my current position was at #6 kot? Suddenly come from behind was Pua Kok Hua, he potong sayur on me. TNS! me drop to 7th heaven! Quickly turbo to get close on him, else getting further n further is very hard to chase liao. Then suddenly come from behind somemore was Wlliam Chan (Public Enermy Number 5) n 2 Mat Salleh fellas. Lagi lagi pressure! Kanasai!!!

@ der 1st Curve!
After der 1st turning, William Chan n dat Mat Salleh fellas gone in a smoke! Suddenly i was 100m behind them. Damn! Have to do something quick! So i quickly change gear again, to add extra turbo! Pua Kok Hua was way behind my back liao, phew! selamat sikit.

@ der 2nd Curve!
After der 2nd turning, i still behind them 100m. GrrrRRRrrr!!! I really kenot tahan anymore liao! I oredi drop out of top 5 n i want to beat William Chan kau kau lat!! Change gear somemore, dis time add another extra turbo sayur cap kapak titanic.Vrooommm....

@ der 3rd Curve!
After der 3rd turning, slowly getting closer to der Mat Salleh fella liao. Without giving him a face, i vroom him kau kau lat. N William Chan was 50m ahead only. Getting more n more confident liao! But dis area got lot of down hill lah, dammit! Everytime there was a down hill, William will whack hard hard wan, then i have to push even harder. With 1.5km to go, i manage to stay neck to neck wif William liao. Running wif shoulder to shoulder, waiting for der final curve to pia! My heartbeat like want to pop out liao! Tuk Tak! Tuk Tak!...

@ der Final Curve!
After der final turning, do or die battle, me turbo at full throat. It was very damn hilly, but dat der only way for me to beat der TNS William. Coz his weakness was hill, i manage to pull clear. But he come back very strongly after der down hill, i was so damn tns pressure! Wif 200m to go. I pia like shiet! Until i crashing der finishing line! In d end, my placing was 4th n William was 5th. If have know earlier, we don't have to battle until like dis lor.. Hey Yau Chee Lei!!

Everyone PR's!
I guess everyone oso PR's at Kuantan hor. Congrats to Petalingrunner, Ryan Teoh, Ajeep n John Tan. Well done my Peng You! Der actual distance was 10.1km. 55% flat, 35% downhill n only 10% uphill. Der only things to complain is no distance marker, so i assuming every 4 mins is my 1km lor. Pandai bo? hehehe...

PM1 Vs William Chan!
Finally i beat William Chan liao! Wif 5 strait consecutive defeat by him. Is really hard to swallow. Now i can swallow everthing liao! Even der Ikan Masin oso neber mind.. :p

14.03.2004 *** PM1 beat William Chan @ KL Power Run
18.04.2004 *** PM1 beat William Chan @ Larian Kubur
23.05.2004 *** PM1 beat William Chan @ Nike 15km Run

Planning to run 8 lapper, slow n easy pace atleast above 7mins per laps lah. Waited for Kenny more than 15 mins liao, still no bayang. GrrrRRRrr!! So i decide to run alone first, suddenly saw ajeep. Then try to give a high speed chase, manage to pace wif him for 1 lapper. After dat, he bungkus liao! Surprisingly my watch time show 6:34s for der 1st loop. Kanasai!! Too fast liao, need to slow down der pace a bit. I think i too nervous to chase Ajeep lah! 2nd to 4th laps i was running alone n very relaxing pace, until der 5th laps Azwar n Pre Fontain kill my pace. Pre Fontain keep increasing der pace non stop! I decided to stay put on Azwar buntut, rather than taking der lead. By der 9th lapper, Justin n Karim oso join der suffering suckertat, was planning to stop liao. But running in a group was so fun, so i decided to continue until i tired lah. Wif 500m to reach 10 laps, my knee start to give me some problem liao. So i decided to call it a day. Kanasai!!

Kan Nee Neh Lam Pah Nor Liap Tam Tam!!!

This is my report for my very 1st Kg. Pandan track speedwork. enjoy.

A Stroll In The Park @ Kampung Pandan Tracks.

Yeah, like real.Today was the first time I was gonna do speedwork. I have been readingso much about it on the internet and also in magazine. It's suppose tomake u a faster person. Well, I hope this works coz I'm taking a boldstep after reading so many of Ronnie's (PM1) blog entries on his Kpg.Pandan experiences.

I dunno what to feel really. Maybe a bit nervous lah at first but allthat's gonna change. Well, I arrive at the track @ 6.10pm and wassitting in the car and I saw John walking and waving to me. Where isthe old lady he was bringing to resuscitate me? Haha….

I put on my shoes and got out and John welcomed me to the track. ThenKenny (PM27) arrived and he too welcomed me. Hmmmph, I must be gettingquite a good attention. I then went to take a leak with Kenny and whenI went to the track, Ronnie was already doing his warm up laps.

I warmed up with a 2 km jog and waited for coach Chan to arrive. Hewas late and I stretched with Ronnie, Azwar and chat with my ex-schoolteacher, Mr. Sarjit. He brought his son along too. Grooming him to bethe next Arul Thevar Singh. Hahahaha….

Then someone volunteered to be the assistant coach. We did our warm upwith 50m fast and 50m slow. After 1 lap coach Chan arrived. This iswhere it all began.

He divided us into 3 groups and made us run 2km. I was put in the lastgroup coz he has yet to see me run. One by one the group was soundoff. He told us not to bluff ourselves coz if we can tekan, go ahead.I was thinking this old man must be nuts. Well, what the heck run onlilah, nothing to lose. I tried to time myself but was too nervous andscrewing up my buttons. While we were running, he was everywherearound the field shouting out our times as we passed. I guess, thosewere the 'mile markers'. By the 5th lap, I could hear myself wheezingand a broken whistle but I made it in one piece in 9:30. It's reallygreat to run at the track coz you have your mates to cheer andmotivate you. I really have to salute the guys there. Cheers.

Then coach broke us up into 3 groups and made us run 8, 7 and 6 lapsrespective to their group. Group 3 was given a time of 2:40, no more,no less. I could not manage to time myself here coz my hands and feetwere uncoordinated and what I could think of was when da hell will the6 laps end. By the end of the 6 laps, my legs were like jello and Iwas gasping for air. I thought that was the end, no way. Coach hadsomething else up his sleeves.

He called all of us back and then shouted "SHOWTIME". WTF??? He toldus to do 1 lap all out. He then hand picked the elites to be in the1st group. At his shout, they were off. These guys are speed demonsman. The fastest guy, Cecil came in @ 58 secs and Justin came in @1:02. Unimaginable! Coach made us cheer the elites as they wererunning down the 100m straights. Woohoo!

Then came 2nd and 3rd group's turn. We ran together and I was alreadytoo tired to hentam. But since this was the last lap, hopefully, mightas well give it all I have la. I ran at my own pace and was trying touse Sarjit as my pacer but these men were fast. I was sort of leftbehind but gave all in the last 150m and was running along side theold guy. I was totally out of breathe when I finished in 1:29. Mindwas alredi wandering off.

Coach then told us jog 2 laps to warm down. I ran together with Kennyand we finished the run in 1 piece. After that, we stretched and jokedto one another before leaving for our respective homes.

Overall, I find this really interesting and can't wait for Thursday'smenu from coach Chan. Running with your mates is a great experience. Ireally have to thank John, Kenny, Justin, Ronnie and Azwar for helpingme pull tru my first track session. It's been a pleasure to run withthem and if I were to do speedwork by myself, I don't think I willlast 1 grueling session coz I'm just too lazy. Hahaha…

BTW, Ajeep, no cun chicks at the track lah. Hahaha…

der_pacemakers # 27

HI ! My name is Kenny Tan, just turned age 32 recently this March 05 ( onKLIM ). I'm a freelance IDD/STD discounted calls sales agent underREDtone ( Mesdaq listed company) and also involved in a non-govt Christian organisation which provides humanitarian relieve work .

When I was young during my primary school days, I used to be having verybad asthma attacks to the point that my parents were always asking me towipe my sweat and don't play too much. Even no ice water and orange juicefor me.

I was also very plumb but did do a bit of swimming (or more of play water) at the Royal Lake Club. There was also a time when people asked me whywas I plumb , I said because of the hamburgers at Lake Club :)

When secondary school came, I lost some weight in form 3, as my goodfriend started to get me interested in track running so I took part in400 m and 800 m and even represented school.

After form 5 , I started taking part in road race namely the PJ half in 92 and 93 where I got 23rd and 20th place respectively and timing of approx 36 and 1/2 min for 10 k . After that , got hit by football bug and played football and less running .. 2004, I was selected by my company , REdtone to run in the Edge charityrun , got 30th place and the running bug hit me again and i hope to dowell in 2005 .

I'm looking forward to get back my 10 year ago form and Ii have taken afew steps to achieve that :

1. Join PM1a.k.a.Ronnie and speedy gang ( like Justin and Azwar ) intrack training at Kg Panda

2. Stick on my home message board the records of American Masters whoseage 45 and above yet can run very very fast , even the ladies who can goat least 35 min for their 10 km !!

3. Log my training in my own blogspot http://kenny-tan.blogspot.com

In conclusion, since starting running again on August 2004 until today ,I am still running and I don't see myself stopping this sport/hobby at anytime .

My Kuala Lumpur International Marathon

Ronnie sms-ed me the other day, asking why didn't I write any report for KLIM. I replied, "KLIM report? My run sucks!! My timing sucks!! Why a report???" As you all know, this is my first marathon. Why on earth did I sign up for marathon although my fitness is no where near that of Ronnie, Justin and Azwar? And they're only running 21K although they're much fitter and faster than I am? Well, frankly speaking, I signed up to join the crowd since many of our friends are running their maiden marathon this KLIM namely Haris @ PM13, Jason @ PM23, Sim @ PM25 and Martin @ Lonerunner. Of all these first timers, I think I trained the least. Ahahaha!!! So, Ronnie wuz right on why I screwed up my marathon. I didn't have much confidence prior to the run. In fact, after Practice Run 1, I wuz doubtful if I could finish the marathon in time as I took 3hrs 30mins to finish the 30K run!!

Nevertheless, on that fateful morning, I braved myself to the starting line. Saw Dr and Jason at the starting line, but dare not say 'Hi!' to them. I guess they didn't even know I wuz running marathon until after I finished the run. Ahahaha!!!!! Gotchaaa!!! Only greeted Tey at the starting line. He, as usual, wuz busy chatting with his frens, not GALLLLSSS yeahh!!! Phyllis wuz no where in sight. I swear, Woof!! He..he..he!!! We were flagged off at 5:03am. Cehhh!!Lousy FTAAA, 3 minutes late and you call this international marathon!! To my disappointment, unlike last year, there wuz no fireworks display this year. Only the beatings of rebana ubi to start the event. Well, there's nothing much to talk about the run, coz my running story won't interest you all. Ehehehe!!! Then, just like all the koh loi yan said, disaster struck after 30K. I had a cramp on my right thigh/knee. It wuz painful when I tried to run. Hitching an ambulance ride wuz certainly not an option. So, I slow jogged and walked. I wuz confused with the distance markers scribbled on the road. I saw a 36K mark along Jln Mahameru, somewhere after The Mall. I wuz so happy then, thinking I could do a sub-5 as my watch showed 4hrs 20mins and it wuz only 6km away from the finishing line. To my surprise, it wuz a misunderstanding!! That 36K mark must only be 32 or 33K!!! Lousy TNS KNN FTAAA!!!!!!

My timing sucks but I'm glad I survived the marathon. I wuz excited when I completed the run and it reminded me of my first half marathon. I must say I love the Jln Sultan Ismail stretch the most. The so-called pom pom gals, the cheering crowd, the NIKE mist station, etc. If only we could find all these the whole 42K, everybody would have made a PR from themselves!! Before signing off, I wish to thank (in no particular order) Ronnie, Dr, Tey, Chen, Martin, Sim, Jason, Woof and all the pacemakers for all their support. Thanks to Ajeep too for not only cheering for me, but all the marathoners at the 41K mark. Gut bai!!!!

Beauty of English

Ever noticed how deleting one word after the other in a sentence can lead to a nice story?

Here's an example:

Oh Kenneth please don't touch me at all...!

Oh Kenneth please don't touch me at...!

Oh Kenneth please don't touch...!

Oh Kenneth please don't...!

Oh Kenneth please...!

Oh Kenneth..!

Ohhh......!!!!!!!!!!

The Trick Master of KLIM 2005

When pass 10K mark, watch read 52 min, too fast, have to pull back and enjoy the scenery, errr… the dark site of KL.

The road mark read 22K but still no sign of the second check point chip scanner… maybe they use infrared via satellite , should be somewhere, at last found it few hundred meters away, is it something wrong… nah… must trust Malaysian Organize. I keep my nice and cozy pace… enjoy morning frustration of KL traffic, hoo-ha…but fell a little bit scary when I see a “kancil” with big belly guy scold traffic police “Apa macam pergi Hospital?!” better run away rather STAR read “a runner cum police wallop by upset KLIM stuck crowd”.

At the 3rd check point, road marker shown more than 30K; my stubborn head still trusted the beloved FTAAA. One thing for sure is I do not have a fast heartbeat or numerous body heats which I will get in every race, strange…
The road mark suddenly have conflict, I see the road mark has been wipe off! According to Einstein E=MC2, I should be 3K or less, still look in site out for any marker, damn… Then suddenly a very clear sign “4KM to finish line” I thought I was less than 3KM? That mean E is not equal to MC2!? I really want to shit and paste it on the sigh board, luckily I try
and da shit not come out as command!

4km left and I got 22 minute…Maximum Speed! Really squeeze everything out of me and generate the fast heartbeat and numerous body heats… on the way I can't stop to help up Penguin 1 and 2 which were cramp, sorry!
19 min in last 4K, NUTS! 3h57m chip time, release… primary & secondary target achieve in sweet and sour, sweet at 38K and sour in 4K remain.

How to answer to Taiwan or Singapore runners that my teammates strongly promote to them as the most basic thing that FTAAA & DBKL screw up?

KLIM marathon 2005

Dear fellow runners,

You guys are showing anxiety symptoms and negative thoughts. This Sunday's race ain't going 2B "walk in the park", don't lose the battle B4 you toe to starting line. Keep things in perspective as no amount of distractions ain't use-up your energy worrying sick about glitches by organizers or their rules. While I haven't collect my running bibs; like other
elites and experienced runners I am no hurry, let alone worry.

As I know, to race we need more than preserverance. This isn't Singapore marathon; recognising that we have a long way to copy them, nevertheless we'll be there. There were circuit races held, organizers who forked out $ sponsoring the race, God's willing on weather conditions on race day, our state of health. Put our egos aside and let our time and race do the talking.

Good luck
