A two cent's worth of advice for Chlow

Hi Chlow,

It's an interesting question on how you can complete your first ever 21km race.

Let me share with you how I managed to complete my first ever 30km race recently. I am not in the best of health. Quite busy with work and had little rest in the past few days because my daughter slept late - sometimes up to 4.00 in the morning.

I only had a 8.4km run on Friday and an hour of swimming on Saturday(the last run was Siemens Run). I become sensitive to smells and tastes because my wife is pregnant. During the swimming session, I had a lot of stops because I felt like vomitting because of the chlorine smell. On race day, after stretching I threw up. However, it had never crossed my mind not to start the race. I started from the back knowing that I won't have the speed to match other runners. Have to be realistic with my condition mah. It was quite a terrible race for me in the first hour. I had to run away from runners with strong BO because the smell made me like throwing up - no offence please. I had a good run until about 2hours 10 minutes. I didn't feel that tired but very thirsty, probably due to the performance drink. It didn't quench my thirst, but made me thirsty. Then, I started to jog and walk I thought it was never ending until I saw the 3km mark from finishing. Still had 28 minutes to go. Therefore I was confident of beating the qualifying time because I knew I could walk at 9 minutes a km.

Most of the time, I lack mileage because of lack of training but I had always completed the 21km run. If you can run 10km thrice a week and do other kind of exercise when you don't run, there is no reason why you can't complete a 21km run withing 2 hours 30 minutes.

What works for me may not work for others (one man's meat is another man's poison). My captain's training menu is a dream for me. However, I put in extra effort when I have the time and those are the times when I become more competetive. Perhaps, next year I post a better timing.

Run For Terence (RFT)

As you're all aware our running kaki, triathlete, duathlete, commando ultrarunner, Terence (Penguin-6) has been diagnosed with brain tumour. With his wife not working and his own job is at stake, whatever assistance and support we extend him will be useful.

Runners are known as a supportive and positive bunch. It's time to come forward to help a fellow sportsman in need. Treatment for tumours are often expensive and debilitating. The patient will also be weakened substantially by all the drugs. Besides resting and taking proper food, it's also beneficial to take food supplements such as antioxidants. All these require money.

To show our support for him, Der_Pacemakers and friends are organizing a run in his honour, after which we'll be passing the hat around to collect some contribution for him. You can also pen down messages for him in a book. As this is a non-competitive run, please bring your own refreshments. Typical of Terence's care-free attitude, you can run any number of laps you want.

Date: Saturday Feb 4th
Time: 8am
Venue: KLCC Park, the large space between the carpark and the mosque
Distance: Any number of laps

Please turn up to support him and spread the word around. Thank you.

Penguin 6

As most of you are aware by now, Penguin 6 otherwise known as Terence Leong was recently diagnosed as having brain cancer. He's been an inspiration to many to take up the sport and we are sure it's a sucker punch to him and his family. We shocked and gutted as well.

Typical of his character, Terence is taking the matter head-on, like so many marathons he had tackled. He's under treatment right now and his desire to tackle marathons and triathlons remains undiminished.

He has been allowed to go home for the Chinese New Year and he needs our support right now. You can SMS him at 0192599457. Der_Pacemakers are planning to visit him at his home on Feb 4th afternoon. Watch this blog for more
info.

I did not get any medal as well in Siemen Run. I felt disappointed, however, it is a good opportunity for me to train harder in order to get top 30 in next year. Otherwise, I will forever stay at my comfort zone. No improvement.

Pm1 said...
I didnt get medal as well, I train harder than you. But next year still provide 30 medals & more cash to elite runners? Better forget about it lah.

So hope u guys oso der same thing lah. Don't hv to take thing so serious want. Work is STRESS!! So try to gila-gila abit lah ok?

from Chlow,

Hi, i don't think anyone knows me and i would like to tell you guys i enjoy reading this website especially information about running lah (but not the 'war' that is going on) I also noticed there is two groups out there that don't see eye to eye. There is a little truth on what is said on both side.

I am 45 years old, a slow runner normally take part in 10km races. Just a ordinary slow runner. I appreciate that i got my first medal in the mizuno wave run recently not because i was good but everyone got a medal. Been taking part in runs the past 1 year. Had some bad experience in the Mizuno wave run.

First of all i was not given a medal when i cross thew finishing line. Was just given a paper with my position. Only when i look and see everyone getting a medal did i go back and ask how come i was not given one when i finished earlier then them that i got mine.

Later i went to collect my drink and breakfast. I did not eat my packet of meehoon. I later gave it to a lady collecting and clearing the rubbish. She immediately sat down to eat the packet of meehoon, to my horror it was a packet already eaten with the leftover inside. She thought i was playing tricks on her and started shouting at me. It was embarassing. I am telling you guys this is because i don't let this bad experience cloud my enjoyable run and i thank you guys for giving me and opportunity to have an opportunity to run and enjoy myself.

Even if there are no medals i would still enjoy myself. I am not on any side and i hope nobody start 'attacking' me after this. I could have easily 'curse' the organiser for that bad experience but at the end of the day i ask myself what is my motive in going for the run. If we reflect a little there is some truth in both sides.

Any suggestion to help me to run and complete a dream 21km run. Please don't think that i am on either side. Hope everyone can take the ctiticism in a positive outlook.

hi ronnie,

i totally agree with you that this run sucks! i was so pissed off especially when i went to collect t-shirt early morning on the second collection day. that guy told me they have only xl! i mean why the f**k they wanna print so many xl size t-shirts as they should have known that we runners are mostly moderate in size. and later i found out that they're keeping some of those smaller sizes as they are limited. actually a lot of runs were like that but normally i can tolerate if i collect on the final day, but this was the beginning of the second day! i was truly disappointed! the limited medals were horrendous but i was not so upset about it because i was not a fast runner but i personally think they should give out 100. actually no matter what you write, they will only be offended, but never take this critism positively, thus the organisers will never improve!

hi,

if they said this is a charity event, then they shouldn't offer cash prize, let the fund flow to charity. what is their purpose to offer cash prize for the runner and the fancy wear?

New Balance Pacesetters 15km 2006

Siemens Charity Run 2006

Something wrong about this event lah...

1) 900 runners battle for 30 medal in Men Open category?
2) Is that so expensive to do a medals?
3) Seem der organiser care more to elite runner, rather then karlefair runners?
4) There are so many organiser, where are the money goes?
5) Charity event or Sdn Bhd event?
6) Shld runners deserve to get a cert only?
7) Does everyone so luck to get a lucky draw?
8) Is this event more popular then previous year?

No heart to write this report. I still remember from Newton Pm18 word "Thing can simply eat, but kenot simply say." From here I shld stop my story, The End!

Dear Captain Ronnie See,

Good day. My name is Hyacintha, a member of the marketing team in organising the SABERKAS RH Marathon 2006 scheduled on March 26, 2006 in Kuching, Sarawak. I cant help but to note with interest The Star's article on your New Year Run at the Lake Gardens. Well done and what can be better than to run into Year 2006 with good spirits of sportsmanship and fellowship!

As a gentle reminder, you and your team mates can register online to SABERKAS Run at www.saberkasrhmarathon2006.com and we really look forward to seeing you in March! Can we trouble you to spread word of mouth to Ipoh Roadracers and Penguins KL?

Taking this opportunity, wishing you and all friends at Pacemakers a great running year and have a very blessed Chinese New Year.

With regards,

Hyacintha Wong

Very happy to see more n more Pacemakers are involve in der Circuit Run. Eventho it was rain in der morning, but nothing can stop der spirit of der PM's. And also glad to see der Penguin's runners too, Tan Khee Meng & Tan Chee Wee. And never forget my good frens too lah, who else ah? Runwitme lah.

As usual der race started at 7.30am, reason for der delay is due to rain n some came late for der registration & reporting. This time RTM also here, star-metro reporter also here. Woah! Getting more n more publicity liao.

among der PM's in circuit run are...
Pm1, Chen Pm8, Vincent Pm10, Rachel Pm21, Jantzen Pm22, Jason Pm23, Aiman Pm24, Kenny Pm27, Kevin Pm32, Richard Pm36, Richard Pm40, SJ Eng Pm41.

Unhappy...
No top 3 again, smell no smoke at all. I tot i was fast, sumore better than last year timing. But stil, those elite fellas lap me twice sumore. Kanasai, I'm speechless.

Happy...
This time I beat der hardcore Vincent Wong again, at der 3rd n der half loops. I oredi potong sayur him, n never dare to look back anymore. On New Yrs Run I also beat him, but he got cramp on der last loop. So it is not fair lah, as for this time I beat him wit his best out. Now baru fair mah.

My Split Time:
02.3km - 10' 23.40
04.6km - 10' 32.84 > 0h 20' 56.24
06.9km - 10' 24.68 > 0h 31' 20.92
09.2km - 10' 29.20 > 0h 41' 50.12
11.5km - 10' 28.63 > 0h 52' 18.75

18.4km - 10' 03.30 > 1h 23' 11.39

No matter how hard I try also, I still cant make it to der 9 loops within 90mins. So impossible to do it!
