Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2004 – Prerace Assessment by PM7

Ronnie has asked me to gauge my level of readiness for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2004 that is just around the corner. As I have doubts about my abilities, he said by this way I could approach the race not setting to achieve unachievable targets. Let’s pause to assess.

Primary goal from the race = To complete the race within certain time or race as catalyst to kickstart training for next year
Answer = Agreed. But not setting any target.
Score:- 10%

Level of preparation: physical, from building pretty decent mileage and mental confidence = Level of preparation
Answer = Agreed. But level of preparation is still inadequate
Score = 10%

No physical ailments
= No disruptions in preparation
Answer = Somewhat agree. But recovering from fever and knee injury
Score = 10%

Intelligent diet = Nutritional servings
Answer = Somewhat agree. But couldn’t resist rendang during recent Hari Raya
Score = 10%

Minimize stress = Worrying about distractions that will eat into energy reserves
Answer = Agreed. High stake on Perlis winning its first ever Malaysia Cup. Wanted to watch it live at Stadium.
Score = 25%

The average score is as low as my confidence level. I thought of withdrawing from the race. It is that plain and simple. But then again, I can still go as I have paid registration and transportation fees. I can enjoy the carnival and the expo and more importantly, cheer our friends who will be participating. Good luck to them all especially to Jamie Pang, Justin Lee, Ken Chan, Jimmy Thong, the Penguins 1, 2, 5 and 6, Ketam Batu, Becholi and gang, Rohaizad, Tey - who has just completed Bangkok Marathon, Jason, Alex and Kevin.
