16-Hour Relay to Fight Cancer

THE National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) hopes to raise RM700,000 from a 16-hour programme – Relay For Life – to be held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil from June 2 to 3.

The programme is also being held in conjunction with NCSM’s 40th anniversary. The Relay For Life will start at 6pm on June 2 and end at 10am the following day. Participants can either walk or run.

Relay For Life is a growing movement in the global fight against cancer. American Dr Gordon Klatt initiated the programme in 1985 when he walked 24 hours and raised US$27,000 for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay For Life events around the world have raised money to support programmes aimed at eliminating cancer.

In Malaysia, the NCSM is venturing into the programme to raise funds to set up a cancer screening and resource centre in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, to upgrade the NCSM Cancer Treatment Centre in Tong Shin Hospital and to fund NCSM’s school education programme.

The registration fee is RM10 for an individual and RM100 for a team of 10 people. The NCSM also hopes to create a carnival atmosphere during the Relay For Life programme.
