This is unbelievably the worst run I have ever encountered so far, even when taking into account the standard of the local organisers. The organisers simply did not care about the health and welfare of the participants. The run was originally scheduled to start at 6.45, as stated on the form. But somehow they started it at 7.30. The worst part was they made us wait at the starting line under the heavy rain for about 40 minutes! Before that most of us were already drenched while trying to get to the pen (kandang) since most of us could not get a parking spot nearby and there was absolutely no cover. In the pen, there was also no proper tent for us in case of such a situation. Imagine, the form said reporting time 5.15 until 6.00, what if some runners not 'sek zhou' (know what to do) and already reach there before 6? The most insulting thing about the long wait at the start line is that the org was waiting for some stupid VIP to arrive. Of course it's easy for them to do, since they are comfy under their tent and their jackets, but they did not think about us who are wearing shorts and vests. As one uncle beside me said, "they treat us as lembu!". The MCs can still joke around when we were shouting and asking them to just start the race. Really thank God that no one had to be sent to hospital. As I said at the start line, I will say a big "F**K YOU" to the org. Lousy organisation and no Plan B. Really fail 0/10. Thanks.

PS sorry for the really long comment, but I really wanna let out my frus.

It was pretty annoying for them to make us wait UNDER the rain so just that the MB could make his speech (not that he has anything important to say). Started the run completely soaked!
Not sure if the race would turned out any better even without the rain though.
And yes...the route did feel a whole lot shorter than what was supposed to be!

Posting on behalf of Carboman

Some race organizers have proven year after year that they have no intention of improving. We as operators of our blogs reserve the right to ascertain which event we want to feature or not. Previously we’re just doing the runners and organizers a favour by including their races in our blog calendars. But if their races suck we shouldn’t continue to “help” these organizers. Instead we should mark them as black-listed races – call the category “Proven Disorganized Races”. If we continue to help provide free advertising for these scumbags, we’re just condoning bad events and putting our fellow runners at risk. So we bloggers should act responsibly NOT to feature such races in future. We should also be aware of the possibility that unless we start boycotting these lousy events, organizers will continue to set up events as a way to suck up to the politicians. At us runners’ expense. I challenge all runners who have previously been victimized: Are you still willing to be used as pawns in

Proven Disorganized Races (pls add on)

1)Ipoh “International” Run (since 2004)

2)KL International Marathon 2009 Edition

I do not think we should stop KL marathon. 2009 is first time failure, should give a chance for improve. However, I do agree Ipoh International Half Marathon should be stop, because they repeat the 2nd time failure.

yep, after seeing the 7km signage want to push the turbo button and speeding up. 2K before finishing was caught up with the 5K 7K students, really amkan. Stuck in traffic and waste valuable time, luckily for those 21KM runners dont need to share the same route with 5K 7K, otherwise......

10km runners run to 21km route, and how many 21km runners run to 10km route ???

I am query about the 21km position....

1'25.20 - Naresh Kumar, Pm37 (67th) ????
I completed 1'39:55 get 86th...

SCKLM 21km 1:24:10.37 get 10th.

Is that mean Ipoh run much more competitive compare with SCKLM ???

kakipancit said...

lets say ipoh run 21k is shorter than Standard Char. 21k by 1km+, does it justify the difference?

i heard from some local runners here. organiser said will give medal too 100-120th medals for each category. but this lady got 30th++, she go collect the medal and they said no more. wtf?

stupeed demon said...

The medal collection was chaotic, the schoolkids were spilling over into the half-M collection area. An uncle in a uniform was shouting that that was for half-M only but I don't think any listened. I don't understand why they couldn't have just handed out the medals at the finish like some of the other races.

I would like to be impartial on this matter. When situation becomes chaotic because of something unexpected, for example rain before race start, runners should pay close attention to the announcements. The announcers at IIR were frantically announcing that the race would be delayed, so a little bit of patience from runners was all they needed. There were covered places which runners could find shelter rather than soaking in the rain at the start line. The runners should do their homework such as always have a sense of direction while racing. The race couse for all categories has been drawn clearly, and placed on the notice board outside collection bib center. Try to study them as they are meant to provide some guidance, rather than depending soley on road marshalls. Good idea to start the race pacing with groups of local runners, who can be spoted wearing local running club singlet, as they are familar with race course. For all intent and purposes, any organizers would want runners to have nice memorable experience in races they organize. Of course, there would be shortcomings as it only human nature.

Hmmm, it's too much to expect people to understand just because you put up a few signs or make a few announcements. This is just giving the organisers the excuse to not take blame. If signs and announcements are sufficient, why don't people just do that and get rid of the organisers? The point here is that the organisers screwed up. Ok you can say announcements were made, but did their actions reflect that? The last I checked, the organisers opened the kandang 40 mins before the start. As a runner what would you do then? You just take it as a sign that the race is about to start. Even when they made the announcements, we would have already waited for about 15 minutes.

And if you are someone who has really been in a race, you would know that some runners are really absorbed into running it. Don't forget the part fatigue plays. I am sure all of us here have given it their all to the point that the world looks like it's spinning around, so little maps and arrow signs will hardly help. Besides that, the split for the 10k and half races came waaaaaaay too early and people were already cutting across the road before that point. Look at it however you want, but that alone is a damning sign of loose course control.

Michele said...

Actually, I could hardly hear the announcements at all even though I am lined almost to the front. And being a competitive racer, upon seeing the starting line piling up, I would definitely have to force my way up front even though the race will be delayed much later.

khokl74, the distance for half-marathon is actually 19.88km based on my GPS. The reason why for Ipoh your position is so far back as compared to SCKLM, was because, in the half-marathon cateogry, there were at least 40 Kenyans in the male category (and they are currently here to stay in KL until probably Ramadhan in September, so watch out). Ever wonder why Malaysia's top male runner only ran the 10k? That's your answer.

Not so sure why your timing for SCKLM is better than Ipoh though, although it should be the other way round :)

run..........as u like..... said...

being first timer in IIR,i noe that there will b alot of unexpected thing will be happened. My only advice to those who wanna join those proven disorganised event is 'expect unexpected thing happened to u'!
