der_pacemaker #33

I started running at a very young age. Every kid runs but I ran everywhere, I ran to the kitchen, to the shop, everywhere I ran instead of walking. Just like a Kenyan schoolboy except I was living in Klang, was not chasing after cows and took a bus to school. I was not good at sports during primary school. My favourite game was marbles!

During secondary school, I was at a boarding school from Form one to five. The school was Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor at Cheras. In the evening the students were allowed to go out jogging. I usually jogged to Taman Midah and sometimes around the lake at Kg Congo. This lake area has now become Taman Tasik Permaisuri. On most days, I jogged, stopped at stalls to buy fruits and played video games.

When I went overseas for study in Australia, I continued to run but only during the summer. Winter was too cold and I did not ever think of running during winter. I mostly ran on football fields. I did not run very far, maybe 20-30 minutes. I ran not because of competition but for enjoyment.

After starting work , I ran intermittently but I stopped completely between 1992 and 1999. I became fatter , the heaviest I've ever weighed was 62 kg (137 lbs), In fact I had to make a new set of trousers as the old ones was too small.

In July 1999, I decided to attempt to climb Mount Kinabalu before year 2000. I started to run again to train for the climb. After 6 weeks, I climbed Mt Kinanbalu on 31 August. After that , I decided to continue running because it made me feel better.

That was 6 years ago, I have continued running, lost 7 kg and become healthier, fitter and met a lot individuals who loved running as much as I do.
