8,000 runners expected to race through township
SUBANG JAYA: Participants in the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ)-New Straits Times Carnival and 10km Run 2010 will be making their way through the main roads of the township.
With 8,000 runners expected, the run is scheduled to be flagged off at 7.30am by Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim on April 25.
The flag-off for all categories will be at the entrance of the council headquarters in USJ 5 and the finishing line is at the council's sports complex in Persiaran Perpaduan adjacent to the council's headquarters.
In the 3km run category, participants will run through Persiaran Kewajipan before entering Persiaran Murni and proceeding to Persiaran Tujuan and returning to the sports complex at Persiaran Perpaduan.
Participants of the 7km run will use the same route except that from Persiaran Tujuan, they will run through the Jalan USJ 11/2J and Jalan USJ 9/4 before going on to Persiaran Kewajipan and finally returning to the council's sports complex.
There will be 12 checkpoints and drink stations and nine emergency points that will be manned by the council's health department officers.
Runners for both the 3km and 7km are expected to return to the finish line between 9am and 9.30am at the council's sports complex.
The affected routes will be closed beginning at 5am on April 25 and will be opened by 11am in stages.
The run is in partnership with the Selangor Amateur Athletic Association and it is divided into 11 categories and open to individuals aged between 13 and 51, corporate and disabled groups, as well as families.
There are lots of prizes to be won and participants will also receive certificates of participation, T-shirts, goodie bags and a chance to win lucky draw prizes.
Application forms for the run can be found in the New Straits Times beginning March 16.
The closing date for entries is April 18.
A fun-filled carnival will also be held over two days on April 24 and 25 at the grounds of the council sports complex.
With the countless activities lined up for the young and old, 10,000 visitors are expected to flock to the council's sports complex for an enjoyable weekend with their families.
A hive of activities has been lined up for the carnival which kicks off at 8.30am.
Look out for the karaoke competition, tug-of-war, blood donation booth, exhibitions by private and government agencies such as Amanah Rakyat Bhd, Moswell Sdn Bhd, National Cancer Council, Fire and Rescue Department, the National Anti-Drug Agency, and Customs Department.
At 9pm, MPSJ's own entertainment group, Kombo MPSJ, which consists of 11 musicians and four singers will entertain the crowd with evergreen hits and popular songs.
Four local artistes, Aris Ariwatan, Fiza, Khairul and Eli, will perform with the Kombo MPSJ.
Visitors to the carnival can also visit 50 stalls to check out the various types of food, electrical items, fruits, health products, sports and footwear, plants, clothes and mobile phone accessories.
On the second day, the 10km Run 2010 will kick off with a senamrobik before the flag-off. There will also be lucky draw prizes for visitors.
Don't miss the New Straits Times educational activities such as Sudoku and a mini Spell-It-Right competitions.
Other games at the carnival include kabaddi, ball weighing competition, catching kampung chickens, colouring contests, floral arrangement competition and family-oriented games such as musical chairs, running in gunny sacks and climbing up a slippery pole.
Four small football courts at the sports complex will be the venue for the MPSJ Soccer Kid competition.
MPSJ Rakan Muda martial arts groups "Rakan Wajadiri" will demonstrate taekwando, wushu, silat cekak Hanafi, kungfu and silambam.
The catching kampung chicken competition wraps up the two-day carnival.
Starting at 6.30pm, 100 birds will be released in the field of the sports complex for participants to try and catch as many as they can.
The MPSJ-New Straits Times Carnival and 10km Run 2010 is aimed at promoting unity and healthy activities in the local community.
The event is jointly organised by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council and the New Straits Times.

Still unable to find the 10km run entry form, even though it stated forms can be obtained after March 16. Anyone got the forms already?
