Pacemaker #52 [Tan Ay Peng ]

(male veteran, DOB: 17 Aug 1955 / e-mail: aptan88@yahoo.com / HP:019-2230 186 )

Hi this is Tan Ay Peng, a Malaysian Chinese Hokkien runner from Malaysian Selangor PJ 17.

I remember my running interest started in late year 2004. It was my brother Tan Ay Bing--- 2 years younger than me, who took me into road-running in year 2004. Before 2004, we did mountain climbing for few years, and now the interest in mountain is still running in my blood.

We both joined Pacesetters TTDI group where Francis Toh, PK Chan always been there to recruit runners into Pacesetter. Since then I ran 20 plus marathons…. And many half marathons….then many 10k….. I agree with one runner friend, Low Sui Wah, when we met in 2005 Thailand SongKhla run, he jokingly said that when he face a running menu of 42, 21, and 10k, he will sapu ( grab) the biggest portion, which is 42k. Reason being 21k make him “Jiak Be Pa” ( eat not full ). Ya, true, I always experience the endorphin injecting after running 42k is at least 4 times of running 10k--- so after run, we harvest 4 times of KICK, HIGH, HUNGER,THIRST, EXHAUSTION, SWEET SLEEP, YOUTH….. The maxim is: no pain no gain, more pain more gain.

I began to take note of many Ronnie’s group of fanatic runners 1 year back. Along the way I get to know them quite well—be him/her Chinese, Malay, Indian, when in the road, we are all good friends. I appreciate runners’ friends like PM22 ETTey/ KC Leong/ Weng/Jason/ChanWK who always run up and down taking photos for all of us. I was delighted by the vibrant coverage by this Blog. And I appreciate the sharing of info and experiences among runners. There were quite a number of events that I ran with Pacemakers runners group—2006 HadYai nature run, Year 2006 Penang Island Relay, 2007 Penang marathon---and I informed Ronnie that I am waiting to take up the number of 52 as a marker of my age. So when Pacemaker#50 Ben and #51 Yee Hua drive their S’pore car and horn around the corner, I know that is my turn. ( Hi, Ben and YH, I believe I met you in June 2007 Kajang UNITEN run, right?)

Runners in Pacemakers group are well knitted in this dynamic network through an interactive and motivating system. I believe many runners in P.maker are so addicted and develop this incurable Runners’ High Syndrome (RHS). They have to quench their running thirst and hunger by more and more upcoming runs!

Let’s enjoy the KICKof Sayuring and being Sayured ( taking and overtaking ) in the running course. Let’s spread this hopeless running virus to pakciks / maciks / brothers/ sisters/ boys/ girls/ uncles/ unties, thru sweat and saliva (propagating), so that less ppl will be queuing up in hospital, or slimming saloon. So I am now brooding a “carrot and stick” “conspiracy” to entrap my 5 ignorant and innocent kids—age 16 to 8 , one by one, into the gruesome running mill.

Long life running! Like Mak Rempits who enjoy in brooooming their bikes, hitting the mid-night streets for SPEED, let’s put on our morning running gown, and treat our itchy legs well with all running jamuan ( feasts ), week after week, month after month, year after year….

P/S : Dear Ron: I will be away to China in September, so reserve my PM vest until I come back.

der Pacemakers #50 & Pacemakers #51

Pacemakers #50
I fell in love with running when i was enlisted into the Army in Aug 1996.With the regular training & running sessions, i began my running chapter in my life. And i signed for the 1st running race in my life, the Army Half Marathon in 1997.. i was highly motivated by the huge number of participants in that race. And in that year itself, i blindly signed up for the marathon (yes crazy uh!!), the Mobil Marathon 1997... it was awesome!! Without proper training, i suffered cramps at the 20km mark... and had to hobble/jog/walk, finishing it in more than 5hrs.. What a wonderful feeling to accomplish that distance... from then on, there was no turning back. My 2nd marathon was at the 1998 Singapore International Marathon.. and to date, i've done 12 marathons, enjoying each run. Entering the world of triathlon has also been a lifelong dream and accomplishing my 1st Ironman in Langkawi in 2007 was an experience I'd never forget. And will be attempting my 1st Ultramarathon 50km in Kedah on 7 Sep 2007. Really looking forward to it.

Along my running journey, I've made many new friends in Singapore & Malaysia, through running groups like SGRunners & Pacemakers, and running club Pacesetters. It is very motivational to see friends taking up running & improving their fitness. And I've also grown to take part in races in both Singapore & Malaysia. It was just a natural progression that in 2006, i joined the Pacesetters as a member. And on 7 Aug 2007, the Captain of the Pacemakers, Ronnie, invited me to join them as Pacemaker #50.. whoa, I'm truly honoured to be a part of the running fanatics.. haha. And I hope to run as long as I live!!

Cheers
Ben @ Pm50

Pacemakers #51
I will need to thank my beloved “hubby” for bringing me into the running world :) I started my first race in year 2005 where I participated in the 10k run in KLIM. The reason I went for the run is due to Ben wanted to join the full marathon and he needed chauffeur to send him to the race. At the end, I decided to join a 10k run myself instead of just watching him racing ..... I completed the race in 1hr 26mins which is just 4 mins shorter than the qualifying time but I was extremely proud of myself for completing the 10k run. After this race, I went for more and more 10k run in the year of 2005 and decided to upgrade myself to half marathon in year 2006.

My first half marathon is also done in KLIM. After completed my first half marathons, the feeling of achievement had brought me to more races....and I also realized that to complete a half marathon “within the qualifying time”, I will need frequent training. That was the time where I joined pacesetters, knowing friends from pacemakers network, Sgrunners. This was also the year where I converted a numbers of my friends and family members to become runners and watching them enjoying the healthier life.

Year 2007.. I upgraded myself again... this time I done my first full marathon in KLIM. Completed my maiden run within 4hr 26mins..Whoa yeah!!. now, my dream is to be able to participate in ultra marathon, triathlon and eventually be an “ironman”.

Last but not least, I must thanks Ronnie for inviting me to be part of Pacemakers and wish all the runners out there continue to enjoy their run, their race and more important is to stay healthy!!

Cheers,
Yee Hua @ Pm51

BUKIT JAMBUL MERDEKA HIKATHON

I came back from Penang yesterday. I took part in the Bukit Jambul Merdeka Hikathon, held on 26 August 2007. This is my first hikathon experience.

The race has no medals to offer. Top 50 got hampers. I was not in the top 50. Finishers received a certificate. No bibs for participants but participants received a t-shirt.My wrist band number is 1009.

My event started with 2.5 km run on the road with up and down hills. My timing split was 15 min+.

The next 4 km was a hike at Bukit Jambul area. Lots of participants caused congestion in the hiking area. Very tough for me because after the run I had no more energy to hike. Took me more than 1.5 hrs to finish the hike. The route was very slippery as it rained the day before the event. The route was not easy for hiking as there are up and down hills. Certain path had to hold on to the rope when hiking down the steep hills.

My timing for the whole event 2 hrs 11 min 1.86 sec.

Regards,

Result update on Merdeka Run / Larian Lebuh Raya / Subang Jaya Run

What : Merdeka Subang Jaya 10KM Run (SJ)

When : 26th August 2007
Where : Stadium Subang Jaya, S'gor
Distance : 9.74km (by Abu GPS) / 9.86km by (Rashid Nike+)
Prizes : 1st - 25th nia!
Medals : 1st - 100th nia!

This year SJ10K Run standard very high n oso very competative. Base on last year timing of 49mins, still qualify to get medal. Unfortunally this year after 48mins, sayonara liao. Zulazlan der Pm43 was one of der victim of der border line n sumore setting his personal. Yet he miss by 5 placing only, if not bcoz of his shin problem can easily make der cut.

My dream of sub 40mins gone in a smoke, today perfomance really under par. I think yday didnt really have a proper rest after der Merdeka Run at Permaisuri Park. Race start on time, once der flagging off start. I push really hard to avoid der big crowd, to my surprise Chen Pong Pong sayur me so easily at der 1km mark there. To add more to my kan cheong-ness, Sean Quah, Saravana & Pong2 all oredi ahead of me. I try my best to stick close to der group, after catching up wit Sara at 3km mark. Pong2 pull it away, wit everytime I try to get close. Then hor, I know his trick liao. So hor, I try to give him some pressure. After a few time, he oredi tired liao.. hehehe... Sorry Pong2!

Then my next chase is Sean Quah, he still going strong. But after 7km, my gap wit Sean is getting further liao. Yet I still no give up, my pia feeling still very strong. Finally wit 1km to go, can see der stadium liao [insert cinya happy here]. But suddenly when I saw der U-turn still long way & long stretch, my pia spirit gone in a smoke. I take a look at my stop watch, oredi 39mins plus liao. Impossible to hit sub 40mins, sob.. sob.. Mood really down liao, lucky saw Tey's at stadium entrace to give moral support to all der runners. Without disappointed him, I Pia! Pia! Pia! until finish, Fuyo lucky still manage to make it top 25th placing. Coz top 25th placing awarded wit mini prizes, cinya Thank You to der organiser making der event so happening n memorable, definaly I will come back again next year!
