Welcome to der Family : PACEMAKERS #31
Running has always been part of my overall wellness and health programme (ok, that sounds űber cheesy!) – it was just something I did. Maybe not in school but definitely since university. So I definitely don’t fit the profile of a typical runner who took up the sport to lose weight or address a lifestyle illness. I have only been training almost exclusively on treadmills (a.k.a. dreadmills) until I joined Ronnie’s team in mid 2009. Since then, there were only twice I stepped onto treadmills and on both occasions, during a vacation in a place I wasn’t familiar with. From Wednesday’s weekly runs with the team, I’ve joined one of the guys from the team during their other weekday or weekend runs.
This was also about the time I started participating in races, a few here and there. Training with Ronnie and his team has helped me move from a “back of the pack” to the “middle of pack”; nope, don’t think I’ll move any further front than this and it’s ok (I know my limits!). I have completed various distances, mostly shorter ones. At the moment, there isn’t really a desire or passion to do longer distances and there’s always the time and commitment required for training for these distances. Of course, these words may just come back to haunt me especially now that it’s on the blog.
Again, running is something I do for recreation/fun; I still have a day job although we all wish otherwise! I don’t run as religiously as some of the guys – it could be as little as twice a week to maybe, 4. I cross train on the other days – weight training about 3 times a week, cross training on the elliptical on the days I don’t run, yoga about 5-6 times a week and occasionally, pole dance.
I took a few hiatus from running – when I was abroad; when my nerves were blocked and I couldn’t feel the ground; and when I suffered a major injury (nope, not willing to talk about it in a public forum). Despite this injury (or maybe because of it), I made the move to transition to minimalist footwear running and it’s been close to a year since I started pounding in the Vibrams. I’m using the Bikilas for races and the KSO as the workhorse although I’m beginning to downgrade the Bikilas for casual walkabouts in malls, shops etc. Transitioning from a fully shod footwear to minimalist footwear has not been easy and it took me almost 2 months to be able to run up to 7km but the payoffs have been tremendous – a lighter feel and a better running gait (then again, this could all be in the mind).
A lot of peeps are surprised to find out that I’m vegan and are able to run and train as I do. It’s no rocket science and as long as you’re fueling your body with the necessary nutrients, there’s nothing to stop you from running, training or going about your life. That and staying away from the usual vices. Oh ok, perhaps an indulgence once in a while.
The key takeaway I have learnt is not about winning or achieving a certain timing (Ronnie will beg to differ naturally!). It is about the camaraderie with fellow runners whether during training runs or races and lasting friendships built. I’m blessed to have met with so many runners, especially my training partners who are selfless and would give up the opportunity to run their pace to accompany me at my tortoise pace. There is also the perseverance when it’s gets tough
(look, it’s going to hurt at some point during a run or race) or sitting out an injury and discipline to take to training.

Welcome to der Family : Pacemakers # 67
After I graduated, I started to run more often, joining short races of 5k, 10k, and 21k during year 2000 to 2004. At that time, I didn’t train consistently, taking weeks or even months on and off running. I realized that if you stop running for a while, it gets harder to start again. You will feel your pace has dropped and you will experience a shortness of breath easily. This is what I get for not training consistently. I feel de-motivated and eventually stopped running for 4 years.
Fast forward to year 2008, not believing that I would actually take part in a full marathon, I was tempted to sign up for Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM). After much hesitation, I decided to say yes to this race and sign up during the early bird promotion, fearing the registration will be full if I ponder longer. I have also signed up for 25km in Penang Bridge Marathon (PBIM 25km) which was held in November as part of my preparation for SCSM.
SCSM was held on 7th December 2008 and as the race approached, I realized that I have not done any heavy cardio in a couple weeks. Slightly nervous, I panicked and thought of backing out! Well, I am glad that I didn’t. I was happy to cross the finishing line in 4 hours and 48 minutes (current PB) in my first ever oversea race. Having aches and muscle cramps as a result of the run, I am surprised I still managed to do shopping in Singapore after the race!
Even though I have not fully recovered after SCSM, I went ahead and took part in another event, the 1st Putrajaya 12 hours Walk 2008 only 6 days after my Virgin marathon. I clocked another PB mileage of 50km in 9 hours and 30 minutes. However, despite achieving a PB, I hit the wall and was injured with ITB. It took me a few minutes to walk to a mobile toilet which was only 100 meter away. I feel very sad and I realized that I should not hurry for all the races without letting my body recover first. I stopped running for 10 months to heal my ITB injury. I did not give up. I believe that I will come back stronger. I want to be an Ultra Marathoner.
After I have recovered, I took part in more races because it gives me motivation to keep running. However, I did not follow a proper training regime and I ended up with ‘hitting the wall’ twice and eventually DNF in the races. “What have gone wrong?” I asked myself.
Eventually, I did my first ultra marathon in Sundown Ultramarathon 84km in May 2010. I have run 6 Ultramarathon races now and I do not plan to stop yet. My next race will be Sundown Ultramarathon 100km in June and my ultimate goal is to run 100 miles (or 160 km) one day.
People think that I am insane but the fact is, I run because it keeps me sane…
MR25 Trail ultra-Marathon 2010, 11hours 14min 12sec @ 73.5km
Early this month, I received an email from Ronnie @ PM1 to invite me to join Der Pacemakers Network. I remembered first getting to know Ronnie in early 2009. When I run with him, I always target to follow his pace. After a several sessions of ‘PIA’ LSD with Ronnie from Bukit Aman to Hartamas, my speed workout and my timing from Bukit Aman to Hartamas have improved. Now, I can run with him all the way and reach Hartamas within 50 minutes (old timing was 55 minutes).
Thank you PM1.

Shape Night Run 2011
My name is Calvin Chan and I'm a regular participant in local and international road races. The reason I'm addressing this email to you is because I do not know the name of the person in your organization who is in charge of the Shape Run.
As an avid runner, I really do appreciate the initiative shown by your organization in promoting running locally. However, there has been growing dissatisfaction within the running community regarding the Shape Run.
To make it simple, please allow me to put my comments in point form.
1. The entry fee of RM50 this year is 25% higher than the RM40 charged this year. The increase is exorbitant.
2. No doubt that your organisation is using the Shape Run to promote your brands and that, I believe all runners can accept. However, runners are starting to feel that we are paying too much to help promote your brands and are getting too little in return.
3. You keep promoting that runners will be getting goodies worth more than RM300 in the goody bag. In actual fact, most runners feel that the goodies are not worth that much. You may include the market value of those items (including True Fitness trial vouchers etc) to arrive at RM300, but to us the items are not even worth RM100 as we won't spend our hard earned money on most of the things you are giving away anyway.
4. To organise a run, you should first understand what runners want. Actually we runners are not difficult to please. We just want a well organised run, sufficient water stations and a finisher medal. Every runner would like to go home at the end of the run with a momento in the form of a finisher medal to preserve their memory of the run. You have to understand that 12.3km is not a fun distance. Runners do have to put in a lot of effort to complete the run, even those who need to walk to complete.
5. Since Twenty First Century Sports is your co-organiser, why not seek their view on finisher medals? Almost all races organised by them provide runners with finisher medals.
6. It is true that the total number of medals for this year's Shape Run have increased to 450 from last year's 375. But almost all races charging RM30 and above and for distances of 10km and above are providing runners with finisher medals.
7. I have attached herewith a summary of races for the past 2 years for your reference. You are welcomed to cross check the accuracy of my list with anyone who is a regular participant in road races. You will find that in terms of fees charged, the Shape Run gives runners the worst deal. Please remember, we don't want the shampoo, the energy bar nor do we want any of the vouchers.
8. I am guessing that you have in the past consulted FTAAA on medal allocation. Why? Because FTAAA are the most stingy when it comes to medals. But then again, FTAAA normally charges registration fees of RM20 and below. That's why runners tend to understand why there are fewer medals given.
Thank you for spending your valuable time in reading my mail. I would really appreciate if your organisation can seriously consider the points I've mentioned above.
It will be to everyone's benefit if the Shape Run continues to be held annually and all participants of the run can go home happy.

GARMIN FORERUNNER 410 (RM1250)
- Only 4 units available. Ordered extra as thought this is a good watch to use.
FEATURES
If you’re ready to take your training to the next level, Forerunner 410 can get you there. This advanced sports watch is GPS-enabled and accurately records your time, pace, distance, heart rate¹, elevation and more.
Easy Going
Your training plan may be difficult … your watch shouldn’t be. Forerunner 410 sports an enhanced touch bezel that lets you quickly scroll and select features on the run, in all types of weather.
When your workout’s done, Forerunner 410 keeps working. It wirelessly uploads your data to our Garmin Connect™ site when in range of your computer so you can go back and review your run on your own time. It works via ANT+™ wireless technology and the USB stick that comes with your watch. No wires, no manual uploads, no sweat.
Data, Any Way You Like It
Forerunner 410 lets you customize up to three training pages with more than 30 different types of data. You can even determine how many data fields are shown on each screen — one big field, two or three smaller fields.
Advanced Training
For extra training benefits, you can create detailed workouts or race the Virtual Partner®, a digital depiction of your goal pace vs. actual pace. The courses feature allows you to race a previously recorded activity and try to match or beat it.
If you like to explore new paths, you’ll appreciate the 410’s basic navigation feature that can guide you back to your starting point. Just follow the arrow on screen and see how far you have to go.
Follow Your Heart
Some versions come with our premium soft strap heart rate monitor¹ to display your heart rate in beats per minute. The watch has five heart rate zones, which you can customize based on your exact zones. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run. Forerunner 410 provides heart rate-based calorie computations so you can more accurately track your calories burned.
Store, Analyze and Share
Having access to the data recorded by your Forerunner 410 is almost like having your own personal coach. Make the most of it with wireless uploads to Garmin Connect™, our website for free data analysis and sharing. Forerunner 410 is compatible with PC or Mac. In Garmin Connect, you can see the route you traveled on a map, view a summary of your run, create goals, find new activities to upload as courses and more.
Fast and Accurate
Forerunner 410 features HotFix® satellite prediction, which means it locks onto satellites quickly so you can be out the door and on with your run in no time. It also has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver to stay locked onto satellites, even near tall buildings or under tree cover.
While the 410 can be worn as a watch even when you’re not working out, you can also power it down completely in order to conserve battery life.
