Goodbye Standard Chartered

After five fantastic years...

Standard Chartered has decided to cease our sponsorship of The Greatest Race on Earth. Five years has seen the series go from strength to strength, bringing a unique element of teamwork to marathon running, engaging elite runners and Standard Chartered staff members in the only marathon relay series of its type in the world. The Greatest Race on Earth has been a fantastic success, and we are proud of the way in which it has transformed the sport of marathon running. However, we feel that the time is right to review our objectives and the options. We remain committed to our marathon sponsorships in key markets, and will continue to look for opportunities to engage the communities in the markets in which we operate.

Many thanks to all our dedicated runners and followers for all the support over the years.

For queries relating to previous series’, please write to: thegreatest.race@sc.com

Victory for KPAC’s relay quartet

KLANG Pacers Athletic Club’s (KPAC) K. Muralinathan posted the fastest lap and anchored the club’s first-choice relay quartet to victory at the Pacemakers running group’s fifth anniversary run at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

After trailing behind KPAC’s second team as they executed the final baton change, Muralinathan posted 8:27 around the 2.6km course and caught up with his club mate B. Girivasan before edging him at the finishing line.

KPAC president S.P. Wong said they were delighted to defend their title at the annual gathering for social runners.

Exciting finish: Muralinathan anchoring KPAC 1 to victory with the fastest lap of 8:27 around the 2.6km course.

“We had two balanced sides to provide an exciting one-two finish. It was a closely-contested race as they engaged in friendly rivalry to challenge for the top spot when they took the lead midway through the race,” Wong added.

The KPAC 1 quartet of Beepa Yeoga Raj, R. Jayakumar, P. Naresh Kumar and Muralinathan clocked 38:00 and came in ahead of the foursome from KPAC 2 comprising Sri Sugunnya, Jagdev Singh, J. Vigneswaran and B. Girivasan, who settled for second spot in 38:05.

Earth Wind & Fire comprising Michele Tan Bee Kiang, Chin Yong Heng, Jasni Khairil and Syahidan Alias registered 38:57 to finish third.

Race adviser Ronnie See said each team were required to field one woman and three men in their line-up for the competitive category.

“Although it was a wet finish for the competitors as it rained in the closing stage of the race, the downpour did not dampen the participants’ spirit to complete the race tackling a tough and hilly terrain at a familiar venue.

Braving the rain: Annabelle taking part in the noncompetitive category.

“We were delighted with the maximum turnout with 33 teams in the competitive section. Since introducing the relay event for our second anniversary celebration, we have continued to host it as an annual affair to allow the avid runners have a feel competing in a team event,” he added.

Meanwhile, eight-year-old Annabelle Kang Huei Min also joined the occasion with her father guiding her around the route.

The youngest participant gave a brave display teaming with her father Kang Hok Beng and mother Joyce Wong in the non-competitive category comprising 11 teams with three members representing each team.

And the trio from KJA United completed the race in 57:48.

The Pacemakers formed in 2004 have about 60 members communicating and sharing ideas about running through the http://pm1.blogspot.com website.

der Pacemaker 52

As a former track runner in school, I somehow felt an obligation to complete at least one full marathon even though I was no longer running competitively. Yes, just one marathon and that was good enough. But I never gave it much thought until the end of 2007 when I finally sat down and drafted a marathon training schedule. The target would be the 2008 AmBank KL International Marathon.

Training started in December 2007. The plan was to gradually up my mileage till I did at least two 30k runs before race day. Like most people, I ended up getting behind my schedule. As a result, I then decided to even fit a 35k run a week before race day. Well, not sure if that helped or hurt things, but I completed my first full the week without hitting the wall or suffering any cramps or injuries. Completion time was 4hr 2min with an even 2:01 split at the halfway mark.

So my “obligation” was completed and it was time to pack my bags and leave the marathon scene. But the marathon itch would soon come back and three months later, I had my first run with the Pacemakers. As of now, it has been a year with the pacemakers and it truly has been an enjoyable experience training, racing, and volunteering as one big family. Not to mention having an exceedingly popular blog to represent us.

At the Bidor Half Marathon 2009. From L-R – Andrew (PM 59), Victor, Me.

I’m currently preparing for my second (Penang) and third full marathon (Singapore) this November and December respectively. Like most working people, I’m pushed to have most of my trainings done during the weekends. But nonetheless, I try to fit in a few runs before work during weekdays as well.

Yup, so that’s all from me now. Do keep updated with my blog at http://runningmagic.blogspot.com.

5th Pacemakers Network Run 2010

Dear all,

Due to the good support given by the running communities in our recently concluded Pacemakers Anniversary Run 2009 on 30th August, we from Der Pacemakers group would like to say a big THANK YOU for all your support. Without the runners this event will not happen.

And in the meantime a lot of passionate runners were also asking if we are planning to hold the Pacemakers Network Run a.k.a New Year Run in 2010. To answer that, the group is more than happy to organise this annual New Year run to kickstart a brand new year, but the biggest challenges that the group have in organising runs nowadays are the cost involved. From drinks, food and all the way to making the medal, prices had increased tremendously.

In view of this, and in order to plan ahead and ensure that Pacemakers Network Run 2010 happens, we are seeking for kind sponsorship of funds to ease the financial challenges that we are facing. The group will hope to see that the run happen for 2010 and we do believe all the runners are keen to be part of it too.

If you or your company would like to be a sponsor for Pacemakers Network Run 2010, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Ronnie See (Email: der_pacemaker@yahoo.com or 012-2795208)

Your help & support is very much appreciated! Thank you!
