Juz joke...

Customer : Waiter, there's a fly in my soup.
Waiter : That's all right, Sir, he won't drink much.

Customer : Waiter, there's a fly swimming in my soup.
Waiter : So what do you expect me to do, call a lifeguard?

Customer : Waiter, what's the meaning of this fly in my tea cup?
Waiter : I wouldn't know, Sir, I'm a waiter, not a fortune teller.

Customer : Waiter, this soup tastes funny.
Waiter : Funny? But why aren't you laughing?

Son : Daddy, have you ever been to Egypt?
Father : No. Why do you ask that?
Son : Well, where did you get mummy then?

1st thief : Oh ! The police is here. Quick! Jump out of the window!
2nd thief : But this is the 13th floor.
1st thief : Hurry! this is no time for superstitions.

Man : How old is your father?
Boy : As old as me.
Man : How can that be?
Boy : He became a father only when I was born.

A lady went to a restaurant and ordered a bowl of soup.
Lady : Waiter, what is this soup called?
Waiter : It is called special chicken soup.
Lady : But I see no chicken in it!
Waiter : That's why it's so special!

PM1 vs Ronnie See

Y'day it was da 1st time PM1 battle wif Ronnie See. One of the big race of the year lah. Both work late, so they decided to race each other at 8:30pm. Both didn't dare to push for the 1st lap. Don't want to show power yet. After that, slightly increase bit by bit liao. At laps 4, PM1 look a bit tired n timing oso drop. So Ronnie decided to start turbo. PM1 hv no choice, but to follow. N their timing is back to normal after that.

Wif 2 more laps to go, Ronnie start to tear leg liao. PM1 follow close behind, as close as to the buntut lah. Finally last lap, both oso show the true color liao. Sprint like Hicham Bekelele. In the end,
both finish the same time. So no argument, both ended happly. There will be a rematch again, but they havent set the date yet. N they are aiming for the world record time.

6:34 -
6:06 - 12m 41s
5:53 - 18m 35s
5:54 - 24m 29s
5:56 - 30m 25s
5:54 - 36m 19s
5:40 - 41m 59s
5:12 - total: 47m 12.53s (justin) 5:21 - total: 47m 21.55s (ronnie)

At laps 6 and 7, Mr. Ronnie See upped the tempo and Justin Lee struggled to hang on to Ronnie's buntut. Justin Lee's breathing was becoming more and more laboured and there were doubts as to whether he could complete the 8th and final lap. Justin Lee was wondering whether Ronnie See was upping the pace to try to take away the finishing kick of Justin Lee?
At the final lap, it was all or nothing, and Justin managed to complete the lap in 5:12, and Ronnie in 5:21. All in all new (unintended) records again for the 8 lapper.

Cuaca, terutamanya selepas lap ke-3, terus merosot dan kedua-dua pelari mendapati bahawa kasut mereka masing-masing dibanjiri dengan air.

Pelari-pelari kini akan memindahkan fokus (is the right translation? I don't even know!) mereka ke larian hari Ahad, 24hb Oktober 2004, iaitu acara 20km. Justin pasti akan pancit.

Sekian, terima kasih. Majulah Sukan Untuk Negara.

Kudos to ''KRI''

Hi,
We are really amaze by the organizer for this year KRI 10K run event, the start point was distribute ribbon to avoid sneaker, and half way on theroute was distribute ribbon for checking to avoid cheating! This race really good in controlling for cheating, as compare to a lot of KL race such as adidas KOTR, Shah Alam run or even PJ half.

To delight more, five of us manage to grab a trophy from this event and weare please that runner above third placing also got change to go to stage! What else more that a runner is asking for?! Did I mention the lucky draw? One of us although does not manage to get a trophy, but he does lucky enoughto get a Power Bar product in lucky draw, and he was so happy on this.

We will definitely aiming for this event next year, and we are expecting there will be more elite runner will be aiming for top 20 spot in men open. About there is only one BIB number, in fact I also still considering, is this a good or bad for runners? Because I miss out one who I should overtake because I thought it was belong to different category, from the outlook. But this case will be same to other, as behind me do have many runners and they may miss to take over me. So should we leave this as it is?

In a nut shell, I like to say "KUDOS" to KRI, which far better compare to Ipoh International Run that a lot of runners still complain until now.

Regards, KH Chen

Beijing Marathon updates

Comment from a Hong Kong runner about Beijing Marathon
(special thank to Tey Eng Tiong for taking so much time to translate this report for this banana ppl, like me lah, hahaha....)

Here how it goes....

This a comment from a Hong Kong runner who just take part in Beijing Marathon. Translate by Tey Eng Tiong

Do you imagine take part in a full marathon, waterstation will not supply water? Do you think you need to bring money along to buy water? Do you think you need to fight with car on the road of full marathon?

I went to Beijing Marathon with my eight friends, even my friends don't have enough time to train for this race, but they went there just for participant and hopefully to finish it. Before start the race, there is about 24,000 participants gather at Tiananman, a lot of university student take part, so can a lot of banner from this university, all this will let you imagine this is a good marathon, but this is for a while only, all like for a while only.

When I reach 15km mark, water station how come no water already? I continue, just hope next water station will have supply me water, but all the hope disappear, only can saw a lof cups on the road, then I knew that I can't hope water station already, so must find someway to get water, felt very very thirsty, don't know how long I ran, suddenly saw on the road got one half bottle water, I take it up immediately without any thinking.... i toke it and drink.

All the water station is without water supply, I maintain it for a long long way to continue, saw one policeman drink a bottle of the water, I walk to in front of him, and ask him gave me water, then I saw a Beijing resident drinking. So I toke the empty bottle and a little water request water from him, runners who ran beside me, all went to this resident, ask water from him, I felt that we all like beggar ¡D

I toke the little water and continue my race, some runner also ask water from me, my friends who bring money with them, along the way, they went to buy water to settle this no water supply problem, but I didn't bring money, so I can't buy water a long the road. Even if there is have water station and have water supply, but due to not enough cups, so there is only have big water bottle, so runners pass the cup one by one, do you saw this type of arrangement before?

The traffic didn't all close for marathon race, at least half of the road is car fight with the runner for the road, you can imagine how bad traffic jam of Beijing, I am very difficult with the carbon which release from the transport. And sometime I need to avoid crash with the car or bicycle.

This is the most dirty words from my mouth in my running history, even I manage to finish the full marathon within the qualified time 5 hours, and improve compare to my first full marathon, but until now, I still feel very angry, when I return back to Taipeh, I saw the news that two runners died, I am confuse and sad, how come full marathon can happen this tragedy, I think no water supply is one of the reason.

What is this lauzy (barge?) marathon race ???????

KRI 10K Report by KH Chen @ PM8

After disappointment in Bidor run
I decided to answer my running mate question in performance. I plan a tight 2 weeks tough training schedule for this run, under sun & rainand tar-pau for almost 2 weeks to gain rest and energy for after worktraining.

Race-eve
After fully load with carbo in 'low wong', we cheer Arsenal & Liverpool in EPL but have to skip Chelsea to get enough rest for tomorrow. But the trophy is flying round& round in my mind, can I get it? Damn, a sleepless night.

The Run
What a run!I really amaze that organizer distribute ribbon as entry check in startpoint, cool! And they also announce there will be another ribbon ½ ways, GREAT!Before long, the datuk tak-tau-nama start the race & I start in really slowpace, to be cautious & to be observe
spot me? Neh B15 mah.
I go like Soo Mar Keh after the 3K spot, faster & faster until almost 'pangsai', coz of pressure of the stomach. At the 9K spot, I view there is almost 10 people which in my viewing distance, because there is no BIB in the back, I will take no risk and decide to take all of them! At that moment, only tapping sound and breathing sound is on my ear At the last 50 meter, I overtake 9 of them and I decide to let go the last one, as he look like boy. But I am damn wrong as he heading toward Men Open lane! I sprint like hell but unfortunately the organizer stop me on 5 meter spot as they afraid I might tear down all the finishing lane! I really get frustrated by them, but after I get the #20 card from them, then I hide my anger with a BIG smile & collect back my bumping heart from ground coz I speed too damn hard until heart drop.

Pay-Off

I have lost the top finishercard while I change, dun know what happen to me, luckily some good Ipoh folks pick it up and give to chairman, or else I won't be up stage to collect my hard-earn trophy! I have a chat with the #19 which is 3 seconds faster than me & he's 19 years, no wonder he look like boy!Really can rest 1 week from running? Timing? 41m17s for 10K compare 43m last year! Phew

*Some of fren who take part? 3 of us get trophy, spot who? Yellow, blue &orange?

Cheers!
KH Chen @ PM8

P/S ? thanks Tey for photo, Sin Chiew reporter, a running mate also.

Pacemaker # 22

My name is Tey Eng Tiong, 35 years old, now work assport feature reporter in Sin Chew Daily. Since primary already love running, always get medal during games, even study at secondary school (SRP), which only have cross country, but I also love and enjoy running through the estate, oil palm, crossing river, I always can get top 10, so it keep me love running. When continue transfer to the other secondary school (SPM), I love to run from 100meter to 800meter... India friends also respect me lah...hahaha, my most happy is ran 59 seconds to get gold medal in 400meter.

I study at TARC for STPM, but not active in running, cause TARC don't have field or track for us to run. I only ran to Melati during my leisure time. My first full marathon is 1994 at KLIM, but is painfull, cause don't have any experience, didn't do LSD training, my time is 5 hours 2 seconds, even though i can't forgot is I cramp both of my legs with other runner near to PWTC, rest about 30 minutes, even ambulance ask all of us to go up, but we refuse.

Since then, I stop for 4 years, lazy to train for full marathon, but after meet with friends from Klang during climbing activities, like Peter, PACM leader at that time. He encourage me to run full marathon at PBR since 1998, it is pain again cause I always not enough training, so only can finish almost 6 hours. Nowday because I have a lot of friends, which they very enjoy and also serious about running, so I restart and also get a lot improvement, nowday my PR time is 4 hrs 25 minutes which set at last year PBR.

After met with friends from Taiwan in running website, which a lot of them have set 100 full marathon certificate. And I decide to follow them, so I will keep loving in running. Now I have ran 15 full, but only manage to get 13 full certificate. For me, it is still far to go to achieve my dream, I plan before 55 years to get 100 full marathon certificate. I am very happy if my full marathon can achieve with 4 hours... and also plan in future that marathon and travel will 2 in 1 package.....!

RE: Apply Check point / Ribbon in Jalan Thompson

Hi KRI Organizer,

I notice that the route in Jalan Thompson (Jln Tun Dr. Ismail) is the most potential route that runner can mistake / cheat lead to theshortcut, I hope that organizer apply some safety figure, like ribbon (most> recommended), name check point and marshal in the spot.

Thanks a lot for the help, which me and my running partners are really concern.

Regard,
KH Chen

Reply from KRI:

Dear Mr. Chen,
Happy day to you. Thank you for your concern, ya, we have putting in thenecessary check point and measure to prevent the "Cheating Man" to shortcut. Anyway, human is the most complex and difficult to control, so, nomatter what, if someone want to check us, they will have their way, nomatter how many check point and/or measures tt we put in, RIGHT!

So, hope that we can have an enjoyable and fun from this community roadrace, whereby we want to gather people who love exercise/run togetherfor the "Chit-Chat", "Makan" and "laught". See you then.

Green Forest Run still lures them

By Y.P. SIVAM (from star-mero)

IT was a charity run and participants were certainly not deterred by the increase in entry fee when they took part in the Tanalised Forest Green Run at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong last Sunday. This year, the entry fee was increased to RM15 from RM10. About 700 people took part in the run held for the third consecutive year to raise funds for charity. This year, the beneficiary was Rumah Ozanam.

The run had six categories and was organised by Koppers Arch Wood Protection and Clark Hatch Fitness Centre. The sponsors were Milo, Gatorade, Brooks and Centrum. The other supporters were Axel, Bolt and Nut, Imaspro Resources, Darlie and Equal.

The men's senior category was confined to those aged between 18 and 40 while the women's senior category catered to those aged between 18 and 35. The runners in these two categories had to run 7.5km. Runners who took part in the men's veteran (40 and above), women’s veteran (35 and above), boys (13 to below 18) and girls (13 to below 18) categories had to complete 5km.

“There were no cash prizes but the runners still showed a lot of interest in the event. Their participation proved that Malaysians do support charity programmes,” said Koppers Arch managing director Eric Loh Kok Seng. “In fact, due to the heavy work involved in organising the run, we wanted to make the run a biennial event. ”However, the response from the public has made us change our mind. We will continue to organise the event every year,'' said Loh.

Clark Hatch International vice-president said the drop in the number of participants in this year’s run was expected. “However, the run still managed to attract the top runners,” said Lum. Veteran participant M. Iyannar said he was delighted to take part in the run for a worthy cause. “I don’t mind paying the increase in entry fee as it goes toward charity. For me, running here is a weekly affair. The route is interesting and I enjoyed myself.

The organisers should be commended for their initiative to raise funds for charity,” said Iyannar, who finished sixth in the men's veteran category. In the men's senior category, the top three places went to D. Vijiyan. P. Subramaniam and Pauzi Ramli respectively. G. Susila won the top spot in the women's senior category. Chong Yoke Fong and Cheah Meei Meei ended second and third respectively.

RESULTS
Men's senior: 1. D. Vijiyan; 2. P. Subramaniam; 3. Pauzi Ramli.

Men's vet: 1. Yew Chee Chung; 2. Tee Teck Bee; 3. Nasharuddin Baharuddin.

Congratulation Pacemaker 7

Dear Ronnie,

I passed the Certified Credit Professional (CCP) examination conducted by Institut Bank-bank Malaysia (IBBM). Those who work in credit & marketing in bank are required to sit for the exam, and must pass it within 6 years time-frame. The CCP will be made mandatory by Bank Negara

I took the 6-hours written exam at University Malaya in July 2004. The exam week I "ponteng" Kampung Pandan training. The result was announced in IBBM website yesterday and the passing rate was 26%. You can visit: Institut Bank-bank Malaysia (IBBM) website, go to Examination Results to see list on those who passed/graduates under Certified Credit Professional (CCP) - listed under their respective banks, I am with AmBank Berhad.

Larian Menyambut Harijadi pm1 pada 10/10/2004

(report by pm19)

Ronnie and I agreed to meet at the Bukit Aman car park before our scheduled 15km training run of 6.30am. This was my 1st ever run on the route and I was looking forward to it. I was there by 6.15am and so was Ronnie. There was already quite a large group of Pacesetters there, warming up and doing their stretches. Chen then arrived looking like he just got out of bed, but after Ronnie told him to hurry up, he got changed in a flash, and was ready to go. Chen told us that he went to bed at 2.00am! After some stretching (and a quick pangsai from Ronnie!), off we went.

Me, Ronnie, Adam, Khoo, Pua and Chen ran together. We passed Padang Merbok, the school and the road into Bank Negara and by then Chen started falling back (probably due to the effects of sleeping at 2.00am). Pua in the meantime was starting to pull away from the rest of us. The next half an hour or so, me, Ronnie, Khoo and Adam were more or less bunched together and we chatted a little bit. Khoo and Ronnie then started increasing their pace while I stayed back chatting with Adam. At one point Pua was about 300 metres ahead! Khoo and Ronnie were about 150 metres ahead. Our run took us past the roads of the Bukit Tunku area, and in there came the first hill. I was still feeling pretty fresh, so although the hill looked beastly, it wasn’t that bad. By then I made it a point to try and catch up with Ronnie and Khoo because I didn’t want to be completely out of reach. As we negotiated the hills I closed the gap, and by the end of the Bukit Tunku route we were running together again. We also saw Jamie running the opposite side!

We were together more or less from then on, with Khoo making the occasional surges. When we approached the Sultan’s palace I was beginning to feel the effects of our pace and by the Tugu Negara I mustered enough strength to ask Ronnie and Khoo who were just ahead of me- how much further we had left. They told me another 5-6 kms and inside I groaned. Tey was in that vicinity, snapping photos of us running. Past the outside of the Lake Gardens and into the windy roads leading to Carcosa, I tried to hang on for as long as I could and I was surprised to have managed that. We did a mini cross country because we had to climb into the Lake Gardens again through the muddy terrain (the usual exit/entrance was blocked due to works), past the lake, and onto the second dreaded hill. As we were approaching the hill Adam was there waiting for us. He had stopped earlier to get some water (apparently the water fountains were not working) and he joined us again from then on. Up the hill I could see the light at the end of the tunnel although Khoo was way ahead of me and Ronnie. As Khoo surged ahead, Ronnie shouted out to Khoo and motioned him to turn back and take yet another hill. By then I was swearing “%$%&&!!! I thought we were already on that last hill!!!” I asked Ronnie, between my gasps for breath, when were we finishing. I was really dying by then. He told me it was soon! Khoo, Ronnie and Adam were ahead of me. Past that hill we were back on the main road, and where we passed the Bird Park. I was about 70 meters behind them but I then got a second wind and started surging because I realized that we were very close to the Bukit Aman car park. I caught up with them by then and we arrived at the car park at a time of 1 hr 13 mins 07 seconds.

By my calculations, the time would roughly translate to a 4:52 per km pace or about 7:50 per mile pace.

After the run Jamie was and there and all of us chatted for a bit and took some photos. Later it was breakfast time at the nearby stall- nasi lemak and teh tariks all round. After that I had to leave for my second breakfast with my folks, but not before another photo session with the breakfast group.

All in all it was a very satisfying run. The route was undulating. Running with friends definitely helps you run faster and better. I was pretty tired towards the end of the route but with pm1's encouragement I managed to complete it.

One thing though: where is the Goodie Bag comprising PowerGel Tongkat Ali Power Root (Triple Caffeine) by Chen???
L-R: (standing) Tan WS, Justin, Tey, Pua Kok Hua n Penguin 2
L-R: (seat) Grace Lee, Khoo Yit Kiat n Boew.

Climbathon 2004 - Pictures

Special Thank to Tey Eng Tiong, for sharing his wonderful pics to us.

Hi, everyone:

Climbathon is tough, especially in Mt K, it is describe most tough in the world, so, a lot of top participant come for glory, even tough the money is not much, but for your challenge it is worth if you can reach summit and finishing in qualified time, that is open 2 hrs 30m reach summit, down is 2 hrs crossing finishing line. Veteran and women open is same, 3 hrs 30m up to summit and 3 hrs crossing finishing line. Anybody want to try, have to train at bt caves or hill road, mostly suggest can train trekking at Nuang. My feel for this climbathon is, you can't run all the way up, so, it is most depend on you endurance of your both leg.... try to walk fast up, and the way down to finishing point, it is most painfull, cause all the way always have to brek.........hahaha!!

See you all in next year climbathon !!

Tey Eng Tiong

Nice posting Tey!

Runners have fun at Sunway

report from start-metro,

IT was a different kind of run for the 600 people who took part in the Cross Country Fun Run at the Extreme Park @ Sunway last Sunday. The runners had to trudge past muddy pools, sandy trails, tarmac and rough terrain to complete the 3.8km route ringing a huge lake. The run was jointly organised by Extreme Park @ Sunway and the Kelana Jaya MCA Service Centre. Kelana Jaya Member of Parliament for Kelana Jaya Loh Seng Kok also turned up for the run.

Organising chairman Soo Seng Hue said the area was considered a green lung and the organisers were pleased to find people of all ages and from all walks of life coming to take part in this inaugural event. “In Kelana Jaya, there are very few parks where the public can enjoy a cross country run without having to go to the outskirts of the city,'' said Soo. “It is very important that such green lungs are preserved so that people can still enjoy this kind of refreshing and natural environment. “A few runners complained that the route was a bit tough but many of the runners, including those who came with their families, enjoyed it.”

Bidor Run 2004 - Race Report

I kena SAKIT KERONGKONG on friday nite, damn sui! U know lah, once this virus come, everything oso come together wan. Sakit sini sakit sana lah, try to drink 100 PLUS to get quick cure. Which it's really help. Next morning ok liao a bit,but at nite, the sakit kerongkong come n visit me again. So hentam another 100 PLUS again. Next morning wake up? Ok ok lah. But still, my heart felt not very comfortable lah, the feeling was like got big batu inside the heart.

At 3:30am, me oredi at Bukit Aman car park. Very scary, no humans around. Wait n wait, hmm... where is the Penguin 2? Oredi 4am liao! I'm so worried, afraid they could not wake up in time. So i called Penguin 2 lor, he said ''Be there in 5 mins!!'' then terus hang up. By 4:05am, Penguin 2 arrived. Came along was Penguin 3, so we all terus depart to Bukit Beruntung to fetch Penguin 6.

At 4:30am we oredi reached Bukit Beruntung, bcoz P2 drove like Michale Soo Mah Ker. We sampai in juz half n hour. After picking up P6, off to our journey to Bidor. N again, Soo Mah Ker drive very fast. Tekan minyak at average speed of 150 km/p. So we sampai at 6am, still very dark. But a nice parking space, juz 50m to the starting line. P1, P3 n P6 went for breakfast, but me n Soo Mah Ker sleep inside the car. Bcoz wake up to early, need to cover back some sleep.

6:50am, time to do warm up. Quickly get change, n go for my warm up session. Hv a quick chat wif all the sayur, including Chen, Thomas n Permaisuri Gangster. But still, where is GYPSUM? GYPSUM's bib is A087, me n Chen looking high n low for him. But still, Yee Lek Poh Chee!

7:15am, very Kan Cheong (nervous) oredi. BANG! I terus whack kau-kaul, no give chance to anyone. Start wif a very fast pace, below 4min per km lah. After 1km, my overall position was #15. Manage to get into top 10 after 3km, n pace with Mr. Yap (PJ Half 10km 2nd runner up in veteran category). Pacing all the way to the U-turn point n my time was 28 min 44.53 sec. Rank at position #8.

After the U-turn point, everyone start to increase pace liao. Suddenly i was 50m behind Mr.Yap, n he oredi like flying rocket. Try to give a chase, but my back fella runner oso closing very near me. So pressure, when i look at his bib. Fullyshit, oohhh, it veteran category ponya. So legar a bit lah. He oso ask me to relax, behind fella still far behind. N we hv a chit chat a bit lah, but every few mins, me will look back. Takut mah, Kiasu wor. Bcoz i want the TROPHY so badly, really push up to my max speed. Until the last kilometer, running out of gas liao. But juz tahan until the finishing line lah, Mr.Yap oso no gas liao. He is oso slowing down. Wit 50m to go. saw Khoo Yit Kiat was juz behind me, suddenly my energy goes up 100%. Then push all the way to finishing line. Coming back time was 25 min 53.97 sec = 54 min 38.50 sec. n position number 8th. Better than last year time n position.

Yippee! Wat a special Birthday gift for me, 1 medal plus 1 trophy. N also my 80th medal collection n total trophy is 12th.

Past Record:
2003 - Dist 12.5km - 54 min 53.95 sec - 9th placing
2004 - Dist 13.5km - 54 min 38.50 sec - 8th placing

Last year joining Bidor Run was - Azwar, Ah Beh, Berry n my wife, but this year none of them were there. Sad very very sad.

Overall: It was a great race, everything has improve so much from last year. Even Pacesetters President oso gave a thumbs-up, wat else do i hv to say ah?

Next Stop: Bukit Aman 15km Pratice Run (Sendiri Organise ponya) PM8 aka Chen will sponsor some PowerGel Tongkat Ali Power Root for those who are showing up lah.

Cross Country @ Sunway Extreme Park

Race Report by PM19,

I came down with a fever on Friday evening. It got pretty bad as I was experiencing a general malaise throughout my body and despite knocking out at 10.30p.m I woke up on Saturday morning not feeling any better. And I also suffered from a bad case of food poisoning. I visited the toilet 7 times on Saturday. Still I resisted going to the doctor and generally stayed in bed throughout the day, and evening. I did force myself to go to the Extreme Park at 6.00p.m to survey the scene and the running route. Yup, the thought of not running never crossed my mind! I checked out what I thought was the running route and as it later transpired, the map on the form turned out to be inaccurate. By about 10.30p.m I felt better but I knew I still had a fever. I went to bed hoping that when the alarm rang to wake me up, I felt fine to race.

Alarm woke me up at 7.00am. Felt ok, but extremely groggy. I still had the fever. And I had to make one visit to the toilet courtesy of my food poisoning. Popped 2 Actifast Panadols and left my house. Anyway staying near Sunway has its advantage- I left the house at 7.25am and arrived in 8 minutes. When I arrived I saw a group of some I dunno, 300 runners, all of whom were converged in a general area. Parked my car and went to that area, and went to the registration desk. All the lady did was to wrap the sticky ends of my florescent yellow wrist band over my wrist. That was it- no t-shirt, no bib number. Having up to that point, survived a day a half of fever and food poisoning I wasn’t expecting much from the race. In any event it is my 2nd cross country ever (the 1st ever being in Form One, and that was a loooong time ago), so I was just running to gain some experience.

The organizers started with the junior boys and then the veteran men before the men’s and women’s open. I realized from the start of those earlier events that the initial route was slightly different from that of the map. Anyway I decided that I’ll just run along the route, check out where the front runners are and just follow them.

Off we went at about 8.05a.m and straightaway we encountered a puddle. I sidestepped it and went as quickly as I could. The ground was not a natural earth colour but a light gray colour with a lot of stones sticking out. I was trying to balance between running as carefully and quickly as I could. There were some pretty muddy spots too and since I couldn’t avoid it, I ran over it and quickly mud was in my shoes and all over my calves. Past the lake, where the ground was more “natural” – i.e. earth coloured and the puddles looked like teh ais. It was very difficult to settle into a consistent pace because the ground was quite uneven, and there were some extreme hills- I would go past them completely out of breath, only to be greeted by a fairly opposite extreme and very slippery downhill (where I recovered my breath)- so I had to be very careful too. I think there were about 4 such hills- all about 50-100 meters in length- but very inclined and uneven. Once past the go-kart track there was a u-turn which was downhill from there, but once again I had to be careful because the path was full of rocks. I almost sprained my ankle on 3 occasions. After that downhill there was some 400 meters left of asphalt to run on- only then could I really run the full pace.

Over the 3.8km course, I finished in a time of 16:52.68, which roughly translates to a 4:25 per km pace or 7:10 per mile pace.

At the finish line, I found out that I finished out of the top 25 (thereby not entitling me to a medal) and I didn’t even know my position because the organizers said that they only handed out the finishing cards to the top 25 finishers.

I felt physically terrible after the run. I sat in my car for a while to rest. Felt better after that and I decided to have breakfast with my folks. Then, went to Sungai Wang, Lot 10 and Metro for some shopping! Got New Balance t-shirts, running shorts and the new Star Wars trilogy DVD. Reached home at 2.30pm and k.oed. Still having the fever and food poisoning (as of Sun night 10pm), hopefully will feel better soon.

All in all another race and more experienced gained. LESSON LEARNT: Cross country definitely makes you tougher because you have to deal with the soft terrain (that works your calf muscles even more than usual), the uphills, and the uneven ground. Forget all about pacing because it is almost impossible to settle into any rhythm. Just as you think you’re comfortable, you’re hit with an uphill or a downhill, forcing you to slow down. Plus, the fact that it was 3.8km meant that you have to push and run hard from the very beginning- but you have to balance it with running carefully too, because the uneven ground makes you more susceptible to injuries.

While you may expect PRs on road races, don’t expect the same in cross country. Your time may be a few seconds (or minutes) off your PRs because of the uneven terrain.

Bring on the FRIM race…
